Non Technical Summary
We are organizing the 39thConference of the International Society for Animal Genetics to be held in Cape Town, South Africa from July 2 to July 7, 2023.It is the first time an ISAG conference will be held in a country in Africa. The funding requested from NIFA-AFRI will be awarded as bursaries to cover registration and travel expenses of outstanding US graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.Recipients of bursaries will be determined based on scores for scientific merit and relevance to ISAG of submitted abstracts, which will be reviewed by the editorial team for Animal Genetics.Sharing the latest developments in creating and applying community genetic and genomic tools and resources to aid advancements in the productivity, health and wellbeing of commodity species (i.e. cattle, sheep, pigs, horses, poultry, and aquaculture) is a major focus of the ISAG conference. The theme of the 39thconference is Animal Genetics for a Sustainable Future. The traditional ISAG conference format blends morning sessions of invited plenary talks with workshops of contributed papers, posters sessions, and social activities that highlight the host city or region.ISAG is popular in the animal molecular genetics community because of the camaraderie among researchers that develops at the conference due to the balance of opportunities for rigorous scientific exchanges and for socializing with international collaborators.

Goals / Objectives
The goal of this project is toorganize the 39th Conference of the International Society for Animal Genetics to be held from July 2 to July 7, 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa. Funds requested will be awarded as bursaries to cover registration and travel expenses for US graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
Project Methods
The traditional ISAG conference format blends morning sessions of invited plenary talks with afternoon workshops of contributed papers, poster sessions, and social activities that highlight the host city or region. The Local Organizing Committee is responsible for selecting the conference venue, reserving hotel room blocks for participants, negotiating food and beverage contracts, arranging social events for participants, assigning workshops to rooms, other local logistics, and for communicating these arrangements to participants. The Scientific Program Committee is responsible for identifying plenary speakers, working with the elected Chairs of the ISAG Standing Committees to plan the program for workshop sessions, anddetermining the final conference program. There will be nine plenary presentations at the 2023 ISAG conference andworkshops will be held across five concurrent sessions. The editorial board of the Animal Genetics journal will evaluate abstracts frombursary applicants (graduate students and early career investigators)and rank them based on the qualityof their scientific communication. Bursary recipients will be selected based on these rankingsby the ISAG Board. All students andearly career participants may also choose to be a part of the poster competition, with awards for each abstract category.

Outputs
Target Audience:Target audience was scientists and students participatingin the39th Conference of the International Society for Animal Genetics. Changes/Problems: Nothing Reported What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? This project provided US graduate students with the opportunity to attend an international conference and present their research. This project also supported two newworkshopsat the conference. One workshop(JEDI) was designed to help participants build cultural competency. The second was designed to pass knowledge between generations of scientists, with investigators late in their career or in early retirement mentoring early career investigators by sharing their paths to success in research. Almost 100 people attended the workshops. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?Bursary recipients attended the 39th Conference of the International Society for Animal Genetics and presented their research. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? Nothing Reported

Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? The39th Conference of the International Society for Animal Genetics was held from July 2 to July 7, 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa. There were almost 600 scientists and students in attendance. Seven US doctoral students were awarded bursaries to cover their travel expenses and registration for the conference. Bursary recipients were determined based on the quality of submitted conference abstracts, which were evaluated and ranked by the associate editors of the Animal Genetics journal. Each bursary recipient presented outcomes of their research projects at the conference..
