Non Technical Summary
This project will investigate how green infrastructure goals for urban restoration can be met by implementing food forest. The project will be designed as a pilot system that serves as a place for education and planning of expanded food forest systems. The planning with City of Syracuse will be within the expanded vacant lot network. We are teaming with Syracuse University faculty, Onondaga Earth Corps, the City of Syracuse, Brady Farm, and Pioneer Homes. The project goal and objectives are below.Overall goal: Develop a resilient urban forest system that connects neighborhood and business renewal to ecosystem services and food securityObjective 1: Plant a model food forest in Syracuse, NYObjective 2: Quantify ecosystem services provided by food forest [food, water, other products (e.g., potential business -- sap for maple syrup, berry harvest)]Objective 3: Educate and coordinate knowledge exchange about urban food forest, ecosystem services, and urban renewalObjective 4: Plan intersecting and overlapping corridors for Syracuse, NY: neighborhood, ecological, business, food, water with local resident engagement in planting design and decision-makingAwarded Start Date: 1/1/2022Sponsor: USDA Forest Service
