Non Technical Summary
Fresh and processed grapes are a major industry in the United States, worth $4.8 billion annually. The genus Vitis has two subgenera: Vitis (bunch grapes grown worldwide) and Muscadinia (native to Southeastern United States). Cultivars derived from subgenera Vitis are the backbone of the grape industry, but production of Vitis-derived grapes are associated with high cost and plant/fruit disease risk. The subgenera Muscadinia has disease tolerant traits that can be valuable to the U.S. grape industry. New molecular breeding tools that generate high density maps using genotyping by sequencing could accelerate further discovery of disease resistance loci or other fruit quality traits from Muscadinia into subgenera Vitis and vice versa. Until now, only regional research and extension projects have focused on the integration of muscadine and bunch grape breeding efforts. Therefore, this planning grant aims to enhance collaboration and innovation by developing a transdisciplinary, multi-state research and extension team to improve disease resistance and quality of grape cultivars for the United States. Our objectives for this planning grant are to 1) assess U.S. grape consumers to identify trends and needs for new cultivars 2) identify research and extension priorities for Vitis, Muscadinia, and Vitis × Muscadinia hybrids, and 3) develop objectives for a full SCRI proposal integrating bunch grape and muscadine research and extension in the U.S. grape industry. The future goal is the introduction of disease-resistant grape cultivars with enhanced fruit quality through use of Muscadinia derived resistance loci, leading to more resilience of the U.S. grape industry.

Goals / Objectives
The goal of this project is to develop a transdisciplinary, multi-state research and extension project to improve the resiliency of the grape industry by integrating grape breeding efforts on fruit quality and disease tolerance. Our main outcomes for this project will be the publication of results from a consumer survey on fresh-market grapes and the development of a successful SCRI SREP or CAP proposal addressing strategic priorities for Vitis, Muscadinia, and Vitis × Muscadinia hybrids. The objectives of the project are to: 1) assess U.S. grape consumers to identify trends for new cultivars 2) identify research and extension priorities for Vitis, Muscadinia, and Vitis × Muscadinia hybrids, and 3) develop objectives for a full SCRI SREP or CAP proposal integrating Vitis, Muscadinia, and Vitis × Muscadinia hybrids in the U.S. grape industry.
Project Methods
?Pre-planning and stakeholder engagement. The PD, Co-PD and Co-PIs will meet virtually each month to maintain project momentum. In addition, we will host two pre-conference virtual one-hour forums in December 2022 and May 2023 of the project team and stakeholders to discuss our goals for the project and get input that drives our objectives. The project team has reviewed previous consumer surveys on bunch and muscadine grapes and similar products and has generated a consumer survey that assesses U.S. fresh-market grape consumers to identify challenges and trends as well topics relevant to emerging issues and opportunities (see attached supplemental materials for a draft of the survey). The project team proposes to develop and implement a web-based, online survey targeting typical produce consumers in the United States. The survey will be distributed to respondents using Dynata (Shelton, CT), an online platform that allows screening of respondents based on income and other criteria and verify their zip codes. We plan to survey about 1,000 U.S. consumers at a cost of $5/respondent to assess a consumer's willingness to pay for potential improved attributes for fresh-market grapes. The survey will be open from October 2022 to February 2023 which will allow time to summarize survey results before our second virtual forum in May 2023 and the planning meeting in August 2023.We plan to estimate the value attached towards bunch and muscadine grapes compared to other novel fruit that exist in current commercial markets. Since fresh-market grapes can have unique attributes including appearance, texture, flavor, and price, we will use contingent valuation and choice experiments to estimate benefits using stated preference data. These stated preference methods are often preferred for quantification of values, particularly in the evaluation of non-market goods. A utility-maximizing respondent chooses an alternative that is a combination of different levels within these attributes, with cost as one of the attributes. The valuation is then analyzed in terms of willingness-to-pay (WTP), which will indicate the marginal substitution between a given attribute and cost. For example, we can assess how much people are willing to pay for improved taste introduced by new fresh-market grape cultivars resulting from Vitis-Muscadinia breeding. This enables understanding of the relative importance that respondents attach to particular characteristics for fresh-market grapes or novel fruit. This survey will help determine how to communicate effectively with consumers on the benefits of bunch and muscadine grapes and how strategic claims can reduce consumers' price sensitivity. This survey will provide information to predict demand side market shares given different price levels. Therefore, it will help inform growers about the demand-side-responses to new and improved traits fresh-market grapes offer, thus how to adjust prices in response to observed differences in consumer preferences compared to traditional grape cultivars. Furthermore, the survey will include sections on purchasing barriers, importance of the different grape attributes, general buying habits of fruits, and demographic characteristics of the household. Once we have information about the consumer intent to purchase bunch, muscadines, or hybrid fresh-market grapes, logical assumptions can be applied for grape products such as juice or wine.Proposed agenda for the planning meeting. Project collaborators and industry stakeholders will convene for a two-day Vitis-Muscadinia Alliance Conference immediately following the biennial National Association of Grape Breeders meeting in Fayetteville AR in August 2023. The first afternoon of the conference will be dedicated to discussion of fresh-market grape consumer survey results, presentations by stakeholders on major challenges and opportunities for fresh-market grapes, and updates on ongoing research and extension activities. On the second day, we will identify common strategic priorities for grape industries across the United States and begin planning for a SREP or CAP proposal. We anticipate that the conference will have 35-50 participants including the project team and stakeholders.

Outputs
Target Audience:Our grant project team included experts in grape breeding/genetics/pathology, production and extension, agricultural economics and marketing, and fruit quality with stakeholders including commercial grape breeders, grape growers, grape, juice and wine processors, grape and wine regional and national organizations, as well as consumers. Extension and outreach efforts were used to deliver both science-based and general knowledge through informal programs including the online survey (which had an educational component), presentations at conferences, and virtual project team meetings. Changes/Problems:We received a 1-year No Cost Extension for the planning grant to allow us to host the planning meeting/conference in early October 2023. The planning meeting was held in October because the harvest season for muscadine grapes is September to October in Arkansas which allowed us to provide a field tour of the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Fruit Breeding Program. In addition, the No Cost Extension allowed us to continue efforts for the full pre-proposal/proposal and analyze and present the survey results at conferences. What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? We hosted monthly project team meetings, two project team meetings with collaborators, stakeholders and invited speakers, and the North American Grape Breeders & Vitis-Muscadinia Alliance Conference. The invited speakers for the meetings provided updates on current activities relevant to the U.S. table grape industry, research and extension with Vitis x Muscadinia hybrids/seedless muscadines, and opportunities for Vitis and Muscadinia communities to advance known Muscadinia resistance. During the conference, background and updates on Vitis, Muscadinia, and Vitis × Muscadinia hybrids were presented. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?Extension and outreach efforts were used to deliver both science-based and general knowledge through informal programs including the online survey (which had an educational component), presentations at conferences, and virtual project team meetings. The survey content was used for three oral presentations at regional and national conferences and resulted in one published abstract. Our project was also featured as Research Focus in the August 2023 newsletter of the National Grape Research Alliance. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? Nothing Reported

Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? The project team for this planning grant entitled "Through the Grapevine: Building Research and Extension Potential between Subgenera Vitis and Muscadinia for the U.S. Grape Industry" addressed the following objectives to 1) assess U.S. grape consumers to identify trends for new cultivars, 2) identify research and extension priorities for Vitis, Muscadinia, and Vitis × Muscadinia hybrids, and 3) develop objectives for a full SCRI SREP or CAP proposal integrating Vitis, Muscadinia, and Vitis × Muscadinia hybrids in the U.S. grape industry. For Objective 1, we surveyed of 950 U.S. consumers of fresh-market grapes to assess a need for improved fresh-market cultivars. This survey showed demand for both fresh-market bunch (V. vinifera) and muscadine grapes with preference for firm, green, and seedlessness and consumers ranking freshness, flavor, price, seed presence, and texture as the most important quality attributes. This survey data and results will be published in a scientific journal to identify and demonstrate market trends for grape cultivars. For Objective 2, we hosted monthly project team lead virtual meetings (4-6 attendees at each meeting), two project team meetings with collaborators, stakeholders and invited speakers (35 attendees at each meeting), and the North American Grape Breeders & Vitis-Muscadinia Alliance Conference on October 3-5, 2023 in Fayetteville, AR (83 attendees). During the conference, research and extension priorities were identified, as well as establishing the project team, co-investigators, and the stakeholders for another proposal. For Objective 3, the new project team met monthly to develop and submit a pre-proposal for a USDA NIFA Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI) CAP project in December 2023. The team continued to meet monthly to develop the full proposal that was submitted in April 2024. We were awarded a USDA NIFA SCRI grant for our project entitled "Through the Grapevine: Developing Vitis x Muscadinia Wide Hybrids for Enhanced Disease Resistance and Quality" for $7,100,000 for four years (9/1/24-8/31/28) The new project has two Project Directors and 31 Co-Investigators 12 institutions supported by 14 advisory board members and 31 stakeholders. The planning grant allowed us to develop a transdisciplinary, multi-state research and extension project to address strategic priorities for Vitis, Muscadinia, and Vitis × Muscadinia hybrids to improve the resiliency of the grape industry by integrating grape genetics, breeding, pathology, quality, marketing and production.
