Non Technical Summary
Access to veterinary science education prior to high school graduation is a challenge for students across the nation. A student pursuing a degree or career in veterinary medicine does not have access to courses at the high school level in most parts of the country. Although educational opportunities are increasing in public education they are usually in larger schools in areas with access to Career and Technical programming that has a pathway to animal science. Rural areas, small schools, homeschooling, or private schooling students have limited to no access to coursework in veterinary science. Students that have desires to start learning about veterinary science and building a portfolio for successful acceptance into higher education programs in veterinary medicine should have access to the opportunity regardless of location, educational opportunity, course offerings, school choice and socioeconomic status. This project will directly work to increase youth awareness to expose students in grades 11 and 12 to education and career opportunities in food animal medicine. This project will provide education and extension, including veterinary distance-based education, for students to strengthen veterinary assistant, technician, and professional programs to provide career opportunities in food animal medicine.

Goals / Objectives
The goal of thisproject is to provide widespread opportunity for students that otherwise would not have access to a nationally recognized youth certification program in the area of veterinary science. The desired impact with this project will be to increase awareness to all students, parents, adult leaders, teachers and administrators the opportunity for students in veterinary science does exist in a distance-based education course that can lead to certification as a Certified Veterinary Assistant. This project will also allow students the opportunity to embark on veterinary medicine as a career and explore opportunities within, thus, assisting with the shortage of food animal medicine professionals.
Project Methods
The project team will have regularly occurring meetings to discuss progress related to the activities of each objective. Additionally, meetings with the Primary Project coordinator will be scheduled so that the sponsor is aware of project deliverable status, unforeseen issues or delays, or complementary efforts that may benefit the project. The project team will review specific educational opportunities for each applicant as it relates to coursework enrollment. The Veterinary Science Certificate Program (VSCP) will be responsible for planning, implementing, analyzing, reporting, and overseeing data collection and performance measurements from the program. Monitoring and evaluation for the project will include the number of students in grades 11 or 12 that start the program and complete the required coursework successfully. All student participant qualitative data collected will be pertinent to determine if access to this course and program will allow them to pursue a certification, career or higher education in the realm of food animal medicine that otherwise they would not have access to.

    Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? We accepted 30 students in the first cohort of students to begin working on the distance-based curriculum. Students from various backgrounds have been actively working towards the completion of the education/coursework and working towards their certification as a veterinary assistant. Students are simultaneouslycompleting their hands on clinical requirements in their local communities. These 2 items are coupled with assistance from the program staff to help navigate career options and post high school opportunities in veterinary medicine. We have also recruited the second cohort of students which is an additional 35 students. We have verified these students and given them the tools necessary to begin the program on August 1, 2023.
