Non Technical Summary
Ruminants fulfill a unique niche in the food system as they can harvest substantial energy and high-quality microbial protein from byproducts of human food processing and forages grown on marginal land. However, ruminant production has environmental impacts including methane production. We believe that continual improvement of the efficiency and sustainability of ruminant production systems requires communication between scientists studying ruminants across the world. The International Symposium on Ruminant Physiology (ISRP) has been the world's leading ruminant physiology conference over the last 60 years and will be hosted in the USA in 2024. Our goal is to continue the strong tradition of the meeting in providing a platform to update on cutting edge ruminant physiology and bring together scientists from diverse disciplines from across the world focused on understanding the biology of ruminants. The 2024 ISRP will accelerate the progress of the science and practice of ruminant physiology in the USA and across the world and provide an excellent educational opportunity to both research faculty and graduate students and industry professionals. We also expect that collaborations will result from the conversations and connections made during the conference and that new avenues of research leading to solutions for important problems in management of ruminants will be developed.

Goals / Objectives
Our goal is to continue the strong tradition of the International Symposium on Ruminant Physiology (ISRP) meeting in hosting a successful meeting that provides a platform to update on cutting edge ruminant physiology and bring together scientists from diverse disciplines from across the world focused on understanding the biology of ruminants.
Project Methods
A four-day conference focused on cutting edge keynote lectures and integrative discussion with complementary short presentations selected from the submitted abstracts will be organized in August of 2024. We expect to have ~20 invited presentations. As normal for ISRP, the conference will be organized as a single session allowing participants to see all of the invited speakers. This will also maximize interdisciplinary interaction and discussion. An organizing committee of nine leading North American scientists will plan the conference. We expect to finalize topics and speakers in 2022 and invite speakers ~18 months before the conference to provide adequate time for travel planning and preparation of presentations and manuscripts. The current theme areas targeted by the organizing committee are:Overarching Themes:Gastrointestinal microbial ecology, the microbiome, and gut physiology spanning from microbial-host interactions to an update on methane production and mineral interactions.Whole animal microbiome and integration of effects across systems including the central nervous system, lactation, reproduction, respiration, and immunity.Post-absorptive physiological impacts of nutrients on cellular signaling.Inflammation, metabolic endocrinology, metabolomics, and novel regulators of physiology and metabolism.Genomics and epigenetic impacts on ruminant physiology and efficiency.Insights from precision technology and data science and their application to ruminant physiology and management.Integration of environment, physiology, behavior, wellbeing, and welfare including effect of heat stress and climate change.Attendees will also be invited to submit abstracts and we expect ~300 submissions. A limited number of high impact abstracts and those that complement the invited talks will be invited to give a short presentation during the main sessions. The remaining will be presented as posters during breaks between symposiums (~80 at a time). The conference facility provides adequate space for posters and food during breaks will be strategically located to encourage interaction with poster presenters. Importantly, the posters, break and meal area, and main session are located immediately adjacent to each other on the same floor providing maximal interaction between participants and exposure to the posters. The conference will also include an opening reception and a formal conference banquet. These events greatly increase networking time at the event.

Outputs
Target Audience:Ruminant physiology researchers, students, and industry professionals. Changes/Problems: Nothing Reported What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? The meeting provided the opportunity for all attendees to learn the most up-to-date information across a broad swath of ruminant nutrition. For student training, the meeting was attended by 62 graduate students and 17 post-doctoral students. Trainees received reduced registration and some graduate students were awarded funding to support travel. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? The meeting was attended in person by 247 people. The 129abstracts from the meeting areavailable online(https://www.adsa.org/Portals/0/SiteContent/Docs/Meetings/PastMeetings/ISRP2024_Abstracts.pdf). Invited speakers were asked to prepare a review article. To date, 9 review articles have been accepted through peer review and available through open access at the Journal of Dairy Science. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? Nothing Reported

Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? We successfully held the 2024 International Symposium on Ruminant Physiology (ISRP) in Chicago, IL fromAugust 26th to 29th. The conference was attended by 247 people, with domestic attendees from 31 states and international attendees from 29 countries. It was also attended by 62 graduate students and 17 post-doctoral scholars. The conference included 18 invited presentations that providedcutting-edge summariesof their topics. The conference covered ruminant physiology broadly. The sessions included: 1. Insights from precision technology and data science and their implications for ruminant physiology and management. 2. Gastrointestinal microbial ecology, the microbiome, and gut physiology spanning from microbial-host interactions to an update on methan production and mineral interactions. 3. Whole animal microbiome and integration of effects across systems, including the central nervous system, lactation, reproduction, respiration, and immunity. 4. Post-absorptive physiology impacts of nutrients on cellular signaling. 5. Inflammation, metabolic endocrinology, metabolomics, and novel regulators of physiology and metabolism. 6. Integration of environment, physiology, and well-being in the face of climate change and resource limitations. 7. Genomicand epigeneticimpacts on ruminant physiology and efficiency. The invited speakers were also askedto write a review article, and 9 review articles have been accepted and are available as open-access articlesin the Journal of Dairy Science. Additional review articlesare under review. The conference also included poster sessions for presentation of original research, with 129 abstracts submitted for the conference (https://www.adsa.org/Portals/0/SiteContent/Docs/Meetings/PastMeetings/ISRP2024_Abstracts.pdf). The poster sessions were well integrated into the conference and provided great interaction and discussion. The ISRP meeting is the premier ruminant physiology meeting in the world and is only held every 5 years. It rotates countries and had not been held in the USA in over 50 years. The meeting was successful in both the quality of the science content, the well organized program that stimulated interaction between attendees, and the considerable audience it drew from across the USA and nation. Overall, the planning committee thought we had exceeded our goals of hosting a cutting edge conference that both provided strong science but also provided important interaction between scientists and industry professionals working across different species and sub-discplines of ruminant physiology that do not routinely interact.
