Non Technical Summary
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension's Battleground to Breaking Ground Expansion Program seeks meet two main goals 1) to expand the existing Battleground to Breaking Ground program (BGBG) to better support limited agriculture experience participants; thus, increasing the number of veteran and other new and beginning farmers and ranchers in Texas 2) to enhance the success and sustainability of Texas' veteran and other new and beginning farmers & ranchers by providing them and their families with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to make informed decisions. To accomplish these goals the project will: A) Expand the existing in-person Battleground to Breaking Ground Phase 1 workshop into an Introduction to Agriculture Business online course and 5-day in-person Introduction to Agriculture Business Bootcamp B) Develop and conduct the Battleground to Breaking Ground Skillbridge Program (BGBG-SB) for transitioning military service members. C) Develop and conduct Battleground to Breaking Ground Mentorship Training Program (BGBG MTP) in partnership with Farmer Veteran Coalition (FVC) to increase the number of available veteran agriculture mentors in Texas and enhance their sustainability through ongoing support. The existing successful BGBG program curriculum will be expanded to addresses additional needs identified by the target audience through developing an enhanced experiential agriculture production training for beginning farmers/ranchers with little to no experience. Transitioning military members will gain skills and training necessary to become successful farmers/ranchers, as well as the program will develop a mentorship training program for BGBG graduates to provide them financial support and education to train beginning farmers/ranchers. Lastly, the expansion program will add education and support to beginning farmers related to the impacts of COVID-19 including business planning technical assistance and training in accessing federal and state assistance programs. The global issues this project seeks to address are: 1. unemployment rates for veterans transitioning from military service into civilian life; 2. aging farmer/rancher workforce in Texas & the United States; 3. lack of veteran opportunities for practical hands-on educational experiences in production agriculture; and 4. the effect of service-connected disabilities both mental health and physical on returning veterans' future career opportunities. The secondary issues the project seeks to address are 1) Limitation of the previous BFRDP funded Battleground program in supporting applicants who had little to no prior experience in production agriculture; 2) limitation of the previous project in providing participants a geographically diverse mentor pool; 3) limitation of the previous project's ability to provide diverse agriculture production mentorship programs; and 4) the lack of a mechanism to provide ongoing camaraderie opportunities and support after completion of the program. This project seeks to address these limitations by expanding the previous BFRDP project based on feedback from past participants and graduates. One of the main limitations noted from the previous project's participants was access to mentors in different areas of agriculture production and difficulty accessing the training farms due to the participants' geographical location. To substantiate the benefits of the BGBG-XP project, qualitative and quantitative data will be collected, and results will be shared with stakeholders and the general public. It is expected that the results of the research will inform other new and beginning farmer/rancher programs about supportive educational and programmatic practices for military veterans seeking to engage in production agriculture.

Quantitative and Qualitative Data will be collected using nine instruments (see below).Military to Civilian Questionnaire (M2CQ)Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy Scale (ESE)Veterans RAND 12-Item Health Survey (VR12)McGill Quality of Life (MQOL)Battleground Program Skills Assessment (SA)Farm and Ranch Business Readiness Assessment (FR-BRA)Farm and Ranch Business Health Assessment (FR-BHA)BGBGXP Satisfaction Survey (SA)Qualitative data will be collected using open-ended questions designed to solicit program feedback. Participants will be asked to provide feedback on the overall program and component parts. The quantitative data will utilize the surveys listed above that measure veteran transition to civilian reintegration including meaningfulness of work, quality of life, health status and entrepreneurial self-efficacy. Pre and post-tests will be administered to program participants to assess key outcome variables of quality of life, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, military to civilian reintegration, farm/ranch business readiness & health, and farm/ranch skills. The evaluation tools will use key indicators to assess their influence on participant agriculture self-employment. Program participants will be assessed at the beginning of their participation in the program and at program exit. Satisfaction tools will be utilized at the end of each program phase to assess participant satisfaction of program delivery, program curriculum, and ability of the program to help participants meet their goals. The Evaluation Team will review the qualitative data to assess themes for program improvement. Analysis of the program outcomes (quality of life, entrepreneurial self- efficacy, military to civilian reintegration, and business health status) will test the changes in the scores between baseline and after the program exit. We will present descriptive statistics across the four main outcome variables, conceptualized as quality of life (McGill Quality of Life-MQOL), veteran health status (VR12), entrepreneurialism (ESE), Farm and Ranch Business Readiness (FR-BRA), Farm and Ranch Business Health (FR-BHA) both at baseline and follow-up. Initially summed scores for each measure will be used to operationalize each variable. The Farm and Ranch Business Readiness Assessment or the Farm and Ranch Business Health Assessment will be utilized, as well as, the Battleground Program Skills Assessment a part of the Individual Educational Plan to assess farm/ranch business knowledge and skills improvement from program start and exit.Data FormatData collected will be digitized and stored utilizing Excel spreadsheets. A code book will be developed for instructions on input and analysis of the data. A methodology document outlining the study will be digitized and housed with the collected data. The project will create documentation detailing the source, coding, and editing of all data in sufficient detail to enable another researcher to replicate the study.Measurement Instruments will be shared in pdf format. The data will be uploaded to the Ag Data Commons website and the Texas Digital Library and their required formats will be followed.

Number of veterans andactive duty served: 114 Number of non-military farmers and ranchers : 40 Changes/Problems:1. We coordinated a separate bootcamp for our 2 STP participants for the Fall cohort because of the timing. Something we learned was that military members do not transition out at the same time and we had to be flexible with our timelines to accommodate them. We also only planned for 1 bootcamp each year but quickly realized we will need to hold 2 each year so the STP guys can complete them during their Skillbridge program. 2. Adjustment of Mentor Stipends: In the proposal, we planned for mentors to conduct Phase 3 hours for mentees. We planned for an$1,100 stipend per Phase 3 participant. Regular Phase 3 participants are required to complete 100 hours of hands-on training; however, our BGBG Skills Training Participants are required to complete 400+ hands on learning hours. We adjusted the stipends for our certified mentors so that mentors receive an $1,100 stipend per 100 hands-on learning hours that they complete instead of only $1,100 per participant.
