How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?Presentation given at the New York Presbyterian Hospital Nursing Research, Evidence-Based Practices, and Innovation Symposium regarding the lactation simulation sessions. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?During this next reporting period, we will focus on meeting project objective #2, by engaging in the following activities: 1. CSUN's Minor in Human Lactation academic and career advisor will continue to provide academic and career advisement to both CSUN's Minor in Human Lactation students and prospective Minor in Human Lactation students. 2. CSUN's recruitment ambassador will continue to implement outreach classroom presentations and attend tabling events at CSUN. 3. The project administrative assistant willcontinue providing administrative support as needed for our project. 4. The project Director will continue to provide oversight for all activities. Additionally, we will focus on institutionalizing project objective #5 by doing the following: Professionally videotape the simulation of five lactation counseling sessions in which a lactation professional plays the role of a lactation professional and expectant parents, each with different concerns relating to initiating breastfeeding. Professionally videotape the simulation of five lactation counseling sessions in which a lactation professional plays the role of a lactation professional and breastfeeding parents, each with different concerns relating to breastfeeding. Develop and embed in the curriculum of our Minor in Human Lactation Program two modules: one for our introductory lactation course and another for our advanced lactation course. These modules expand on content already covered on lactation professionals to teach our students about what it is like to work as a lactation professional in various settings. We will do so by gathering all recordings from the ten lactation speaker series events we have implemented to date and by developing assignments that test students' understanding of the roles lactation professionals play in various settings. Develop professionally produced self-paced lactation tele-simulation training videos that require students to observe and solve complex unfolding breastfeeding problems.
Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
Objective 1: By August 31, 2024, increase the number of diverse Ventura College students who transfer to CSUN to earn a bachelor's degree in nutrition from 16 to 40 students per year (Y1=25; Y2=30; Y3=40). We have been very effective at disseminating information regarding CSUN 's minor in Human Lactation program and resources to help students successfully transfer from VC to CSUN. We have also been very effective in institutionalizing the pipeline pathway from Ventura College to CSUN for students who wish to transfer from Ventura College to CSUN to earn a BS in nutrition or public health and minor in Human Lactation. We have worked with Ventura College to create a Pipeline to the Lactation Counselor Webpage. This webpage includes information about careers in lactation, all the lower division coursework they should take at Ventura College before transferring to CSUN as well as a testimonial video we produced since the last reporting period that shares a Ventura College student who transferred to CSUN and minored in Human Lactation journey. Despite significant Recruitment and Retention efforts aimed to help facilitate transfer from VC to CSUN, our efforts at Ventura College have not resulted in an increase in the transfer rate of students from VC to CSUN to major in nutrition and Minor in Human Lactation. Fall 2024 data indicate 0 students transferred from VC to CSUN. Major challenges impacting our efforts include leadership changes during the grant, and the inability to do outreach in classrooms due to the VC offering a majority of their courses online, thereby significantly reducing opportunities for networking and outreach to students. Objective 2: By August 31, 2024, increase the number of diverse CSUN students pursuing a bachelor's degree in nutrition and declaring a minor in human lactation from 5 to 50 students per year (Y1=15; Y2=30; Y3=50)We have been effective in recruiting CSUN students majoring in Nutrition into the Minor in Human Lactation. Since our last progress report, the number of diverse CSUN students pursuing a bachelor's degree in nutrition and declaring a minor in human lactation has increased from 16 to 21. Objective 3: By August 31, 2024, achieve a 9% increase in the retention rate of full-time diverse CSUN students pursuing a bachelor's degree in nutrition and a minor in human lactation to 84% over the retention baseline rate of 75% (Y1=78%; Y2=81%; Y3=84%). Since the last reporting period, the retention rate of full-time CSUN students pursuing a bachelor's degree in nutrition and a minor in human lactation decreased from81.5% to 78%. Despite this data, which comes from our institutional research data. Our records indicate that all of the students who are majoring in nutrition and minoring in human lactation are still enrolled and progressing towards timely graduation. Objective 4: By August 31, 2024, achieve a 9% increase in the six-year graduation rate of full-time diverse CSUN students pursuing a bachelor's degree in nutrition and a minor in human lactation to 44% over the baseline of 35%. Since the last progress report, we have been very effective in increasing the 6-year graduation rate of CSUN students pursuing a bachelor's degree in nutrition and a minor in human lactation. Based on our records, the 6-year graduation rates has increased to 68.5%. Objective 5: By August 31, 2024, 95 diverse CSUN students pursuing a bachelor's degree in nutrition and a minor in human lactation will complete a 20-hour experiential learning and leadership skill development training. To date, 161 students, including 32 students majoring in nutrition, have completed the experiential learning and leadership skill development training associated with this project. Significant accomplishments during this reporting period include the implementation of three well-attended lactation speaker series events and brainstorming ways to institutionalize this project's experiential learning activities. Objective 6: By August 31, 2024, at least 90% of diverse CSUN students pursuing a bachelor's degree in nutrition and a minor in human lactation will be eligible to sit for the national Certified Lactation Counselors (CLC) exam. Major accomplishments since the last reporting period include summarizing findings from the investigation regarding implementing an affordable and feasible mechanism for students in the human lactation program to get their lactation competencies verified so that they are eligible to sit for the CLC exam.

In order to meet grant outcomes of providing experimental learning opportunities for our students at California State University, Northridge, we have been able to recruit a lactation consultant, who has over the first two years of our project, implemented the lactation education experimental learning experiences to our student. To that end, shesimulated small-group virtual prenatal breastfeeding classes and small-group virtual breastfeeding support groups. We were able to work with our university to hire her as an independent contractor and the Pipeline to CLC project administrative assistant and myself will be taking onthe coordination of these activities. To facilitate this change and following National program leaders approval, we will be closing out Providence Holy Cross Medical Center's outstanding sub-award and transferring their initially budgeted funds to support the alternative activities described aboveand to explore a feasible mechanism to institutionalize a process by which CSUN's Minor in Human Lactation students can be verified that they have mastered the lactation competencies required to be eligible to sit for the National CLC exam. The primary objective of our project is to prepare students so that they are eligible to sit for the national Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) Certification Exam. To be eligible to sit for the national CLC exam, a candidate must: 1) have a bachelor's degree or higher; 2) submit an academic content form that verifies that they have completed prescribed academic content in lactation education; and 3) submit a lactation counselling skills attestation form that verifies that they have mastered the skills and competencies necessary to work as a lactation counselor. When we submitted our original proposal, we indicated that the Project Director would strengthen the current Minor in Human lactation curriculum so that it would include all of the academic content skills and competencies required to be eligible to sit for the CLC exam. This has been completed. We also had planned to refer students to an outside third-party organization to get verified and obtain the required lactation counseling skills attestation to sit for the CLC exam. This organization unfortunately went out of business and no vendor is currently offering this type of service. As such we will be using the remaining funds transferred from PHCMC to create a mechanism for our students to obtain this counseling verification so that they will be eligible to sit for the CLC exam. The project director plans to explore offering an affordable and feasible mechanism for our diverse minor in human lactation student population to get their lactation competencies verified so that they are eligible to sit for the CLC exam. Possibilities include: a new for-credit 3-unit course that would be added to our current minor in human lactation program course requirements or alternatively develop a non-credit lactation competency training. Both options would enable students to develop lactation competencies and obtain the counseling attestation required to be eligible to sit for the CLC exam. Given there are pros and cons for our students obtaining the counseling attention via a for credit university course vs. non-credit training, the Project Director plansto meet with representatives throughout our university to determine what would be the most affordable and feasible fit to enable our diverse student population to meet this CLC exam eligibility requirement What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?

Major accomplishments during this reporting period include: implementing in collaboration with BCVC three well attended lactation speaker series events. Our collaborating hospital, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center implemented 28 virtual small prenatal breastfeeding class simulations and 12 virtual first week at home breastfeeding support group simulations. Additionally, we enhanced Minor in human lactation student's experiential learning opportunity by converting the virtual prenatal breastfeeding class observation to a virtual prenatal breastfeeding class simulation. This simulation involves a lactation professional pretending to be a patient and expressing various breastfeeding concerns and then explaining to students how she as a lactation professional would answer the questions. We also converted the virtual first week at home breastfeeding support group to an opportunity for students in the advanced lactation course to participate in a simulation where the lactation professional acts out the role of a new breastfeeding mother and the student acts out the role of the lactation professional. Following the simulation, the lactation professional provides students with feedback on how they did. Moreover, to enable CSUN minor in human lactation program to be able to offer future students the opportunity to observe prenatal breastfeeding class and breastfeeding support groups in community we worked on developing a post-pandemic prenatal breastfeeding class and breastfeeding support group resource guide. Objective 6: During this reporting period, the Project Director continued to work on developing the resources needed to enable CSUN students majoring in nutrition and minoring in Human lactation to be eligible to sit for the National CLC exam. Major accomplishment during this reporting period include the project director developing the remaining modules or additions to current modules needed to enable Minor in human lactation students to complete all content on the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice (ALLP) Academic Content Checklist[1] that is required to ALLP's Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) exam. Additionally, the project director has developed a matrix that provides details on which Minor in Human Lactation Course covers each of the required Topic areas as well as a template verification letter our program can provide ALLP CLC exam applicants as needed when they apply to become a ALLP CLC exam candidate. Objective 7: During this reporting period, the project team developed and piloted an alumni survey which can be used to collect future data on the number of CSUN graduates who earn the designation of CLC. The alumni survey is described in products section of this progress report.

What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?Recruitment Retention and help facilitate transfer to CSUN Activities at VC During the next year of the grant the project team will continue implementing all of the project activities initiated at VC during Spring 2023. To increase target group engagement in all of the project activities, the project team will: 1) work with Ventura College's marketing team to utilize social media posts to promote project activities and resources; 2) work on building rapport and gaining buy in for the project from a larger group of VC faculty who regularly interact with the project target group; 3) train a recently recruited diverse VC student who was admitted this Fall to CSUN as a nutrition transfer student as our project's VC student recruitment ambassador; and 4) expand recruitment activities to include VC students who are majoring in health education as they too may have an interest in a career promoting infant nutrition as a lactation counselor. Recruitment Retention and help facilitate Graduation from CSUN Activities During the next year of the grant the project team will continue implementing all of the project activities initiated at CSUN during Spring 2023. We hope that as CSUN transitions to more in-person classes target group engagement in project activities will increase. Experiential learning and leadership skills training development activities During the next year of the grant the project team will continue implementing the experiential learning and leadership skills development activities initiated during Spring 2023. During this year of the grant, the project team will integrate student feedback from the experiential learning and leadership skills development training satisfaction reports and continue implementing the training. Verifying students to be eligible to take the CLC certification exam During the next reporting period the project director, will finish developing the modules (powerpoint slides, written assignments, and exam questions) needed to cover all of the academic content, skills and competencies that are required to be eligible to sit for the CLC exam that are currently not part of the human lactation minor curriculum. Preparing students to pass the CLC exam During the next reporting period, the project team will work on developing a mechanism to prepare students to pass the National CLC certificationexam
Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
Objective 1: Please note baseline diverse VC students who transferred to CSUN to earn B.S. nutrition was 3. Data for incoming transfer students will not be available until September. However following Year one of implementing the Pipeline to CLC project there were 12 students who were accepted and reported that they plan to attend CSUN Fall 2022 to earn a bachelor's degree in nutrition. During this reporting period, to increase the number of diverse VC students who transfer to CSUN to earn BS Nutrition, the project team developed the resources and the mechanisms needed to recruit, retain and successfully transfer diverse VC freshman and sophomores to CSUN to earn a Minor in Human Lactation (HL) & B.S in Nutrition. All of the resources developed (products) and activities implemented focused on either raising awareness about career opportunities as Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) and CSUN's minor in HL program or student support services to help facilitate students moving along the pipeline to CLC by transferring to CSUN. Each of these products is described in the products section of this progress report. Activities implemented during this reporting period are listed in target group section of the annual report. Objective 2: Following Year one of implementing the Pipeline to CLC project there was an increase in the number of diverse CSUN students pursuing a bachelor's degree in nutrition and declaring a minor in human lactation from 5 to 6 students During this reporting period, to increase the number of diverse CSUN students pursuing a bachelor's degree in nutrition who declare a minor in Human Lactation, the project team developed the resources and the mechanisms to recruit diverse CSUN nutrition students to declare a Minor in Human Lactation (HL) & B.S in Nutrition. The resources developed and activities that were implemented focused on raising awareness about career opportunities as a CLC and CSUN's minor in HL program. Each of these products is described in the products section of this progress report. Activities implemented during this reporting period are listed in target group section of the annual report. Objective 3: Please note baseline retention rates for diverse CSUN students pursuing a bachelor's degree in nutrition AY 19/20 was 81%. Following year one of implementing the Pipeline to CLC project there was an increase in the retention rate of full-time diverse CSUN students pursuing a bachelor's degree in nutrition and a minor in human lactation from 81% to 89.5% (8.5% increase). During this reporting period, to increase the retention rate of full-time diverse CSUN students pursuing a bachelor's degree in Nutrition and a Minor in Human Lactation the project team developed the resources and the mechanisms to retain and successfully graduate diverse CSUN students with a BS in Nutrition and Minor in Human Lactation. The resources developed and activities developed during this reporting period focused on strengthening student support services to help move CSUN students along the pipeline and graduate from CSUN with a bachelor's degree in nutrition and Minor in Human lactation. Each of these products is described in the products section of this progress report. Objective 4: Please note, since the Minor in Human Lactation Program was only launched in Fall 2019, data on the six-year graduation rate of full-time diverse CSUN students pursuing a bachelor's degree in nutrition and a minor in human lactation is not yet available. However, we do have baseline data on Diverse CSUN students pursuing a bachelor's degree in nutrition and a minor in Human lactation who have graduated. During AY 2020/2021 (baseline year) one diverse student majoring in Nutrition and minoring in Human Lactation, graduated from CSUN with a B.S. in Nutrition and a Minor in Human Lactation. Following Year one of implementing the Pipeline to CLC project, there was an increase from 1 to 2 CSUN students (1 of the 2 was diverse) majoring in Nutrition and minoring in Human Lactation that graduated from CSUN with a B.S. in Nutrition and a minor in Human Lactation. Products developed and activities implemented during this reporting period to achieve this objective were described above under objective #3 major accomplishments section. Objective 5: During year one of implementing the Pipeline to CLC project, a total of 55 students completed a lactation education experiential learning and leadership skill development training. (44 of these students were diverse, 4 were majoring in Nutrition and Minoring in Human Lactation and 10 were majoring in Nutrition only. In order to pilot the training, the project team developed the several products: Each of these products is described in the products section of this progress report. The following discussion below describes the activities that were part of the lactation education experiential learning and leadership skill development training that the project team piloted during the Spring 2022 semester. In Collaboration with the Breastfeeding Coalition of Ventura County the spring lactation speaker series was implemented 108 individuals attended the Spring speaker series, including 78 CSUN students, 1 VC student and 29 other participants who included members of the community or students at other community colleges and universities. Our collaborating hospital, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center implemented 11 virtual small prenatal breastfeeding classes and 10 virtual breastfeeding support group open free of charge to any mother who planned to delivery their baby at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center. 39 CSUN students shadowed the virtual small group prenatal class and received mentorship from a hospital lactation consultant after observing the prenatal class; 37 CSUN students shadowed the virtual breastfeeding support groups and received mentorship from a hospital lactation consultant after observing the support group. Following the implementation of each of the newly developed experiential learning and leadership skill development training activities, students were asked to complete a satisfaction survey relating to their experience participating in the activity. The project evaluator and project director developed the satisfaction survey tools. The evaluator implemented the survey via Qualtrics and summarized the results. Student reported high levels of satisfaction with all activities and facilitators. The project team reviewed results and made plans for implementing a variety of actions to improve implementation of the training during grant year 1. Objective 6: During the first year of the pipeline to CLC project the project team developed resources and implemented activities to enable students majoring in nutrition and minoring in Human lactation to be eligible to sit for the National CLC exam. Activities include the project director: reviewed CLC exam material, prepared, took and passed the national Certified Lactation Counselor exam. After passing exam, the project director conducted a thorough curriculum gap analysis to identify all academic content not currently covered in the lactation curriculum that is required to be eligible to sit for the CLC exam. Additionally the project director, began to develop the modules (PowerPoint slides, written assignments exam questions) needed to cover all of the academic content, skills and competencies that required to be eligible to sit for the CLC exam that are currently not part of the human lactation minor curriculum.
