Non Technical Summary
This conference grant provides support for the 16th International Society for Biosafety Reseach (ISBR) Symposium which will be offered in St. Louis, MO in April 2022. The ISBR Symposium is an international meeting organized by the ISBR, a society whose membership is composed of individuals with an interest in risk assessment and research related to the risks associated with applications of biotrechnology (http://www.isbr.info/). These symposia have been offered on a biennial basis since 1990, at various locations throughout the world, as a unique opportunity for scientists, regulators, technology developers, nongovernment organizations, and others to share their experience and expertise, and to engage in meaningful dialogue on the topic of biosafety. The emphasis by ISBR for these symposia has evolved over the years from mainly presenting results of biosafety research to including presentations and discussions of methodologies for risk assessment and the relevance of risk assessment research for policy and decision-making.The theme for the 16th ISBR Symposium is 'Advancing Science in Support of Bio-Innovation'. Based on this theme, the ISBR is developing a program for this symposium that will include plenary sessions with invited speakers and a series of parallel sessions or workshops that will address the most relevant and timely issues related to the objectives of the society. The proceedings will be published on the ISBR website and selected papers will be published in a special issue of a scientific journal managed by the society.

Goals / Objectives
The goals of the 16th International Society for Biosafety Research (ISBR) Symposium is1) to share biosafety research experiences and chart new research directions, 2) to foster a productive dialogue and multidisciplinary approaches, and 3) to embrace perspectives from all parts of the globe. The ISBR is developing a program for the 16th symposium that will include plenary sessions with invited speakers and a series of parallel sessions or workshops that will address the most relevant and timely issues related to the goals of the symposium. The requested budget in this proposal is funds to support the participation of invited speakers. These speakers will be from various regions across the globe.
Project Methods
ISBR has formally engaged a professional meeting planner, Centeq Events, to manage logistical arrangements and online administration of the 16th symposium. (Centeq also managed the 13th ISBGMO in Cape Town with great success for ISBR.) The dates for the 16th symposium have been set for April 10-14 2022. The Union Station Hotel in the heart of St. Louis has been secured as a top-notch venue. The symposium website has been launched at https://isbr.info/The structure of the program for the 16th ISBR Symposium will include four plenary sessions, each devoted to a specific topic, and there will be four keynote addresses. The topics and appropriate speakers for each of these sessions will be selected from submitted abstracts or solicited by the Program Committee, in agreement with the ISBR Board. In addition to the plenary sessions, there will be a minimum of nine half-day sessions or workshops which will be offered in parallel on 3 days of the meeting during the afternoons. These parallel sessions will be offered for the participants to choose from and are likely to include additional presentations on specific topics. These parallel sessions may take the form of training workshops or focus on a discussion-based approach and may include structured break-out group activities or planned exercises for the participants. The society has had success with these types of session formats at its more recent symposiums. In addition to the proceedings of the symposium, the society plans to publish selected papers from the symposium after peer review in a special issue of the journal Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology.

Outputs
Target Audience:The 16th International Society for Biosafety Research (ISBR) Symposium took place from May 1-4, 2023, in St. Louis, MO, USA. There were ~ 350 participants at ISBR2023 from 49 different countries. Half of the participants were from North America (mainly US), and the other 50% were in approximately equal numbers from Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia. Delegates at the symposium represented government policy makers and regulators of biotechnology, academics, public and private technology-developers, and nongovernmental organizations. Changes/Problems:This conference was originally planned for April 2022, and it was rescheduled to a year later due to the pandemic, which prompted a request for a No Cost Extension for this grant. In spite of that stressful circumstance, the symposium was ultimately held with great success. What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? Nothing Reported How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? Nothing Reported What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? Nothing Reported

Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? Goals: To share research experience and chart new research directions The conference included 24 plenary session presentations on biotechnology and regulatory theory, research, and policy. Time was designated at the end of each plenary session for discussion. There were at least 70 additional submitted presentations in parallel sessions, as well as pecha kucha and poster presentations. There were 4 additional workshops/mini-symposiums on key topics, designed for open dialogue and discussion. The program was structured to maximize opportunities for discussions and networking among the participants, with designated periods for discussions built into each plenary session, and with long breaks and spaces to meet. The overwhelming positive feedback after the symposium was mainly regarding the excellent opportunity that ISBR2023 provided by bringing together experts in the area of biotechnology and biosafety into one place, to meet and discuss the most immediate challenges and the challenges for the future. To foster productive dialogue and multidisciplinary approaches Speakers, workshop organizers, and participants represented various scientific disciplines and came from academia, government and non government organizations, and industry. As in the past, the symposium provided a unique opportunity for scientists, regulators, technology developers, non-government organizations, and others to share their experience and expertise, and to engage in meaningful dialogue on the topic of biosafety. The importance of biosafety is increasing as countries increasingly apply biotechnology innovations to meet the challenges of food production, environmental protection, and economic growth. The theme for ISBR2023 focused on 'Advancing Science in Support of Sustainable Bio-Innovation'. According to this theme, ISBR identified leaders in their fields to share their experience and perspectives in plenary, parallel, and poster presentations, sparking progressive thinking about biosafety issues related to innovative technology, today and in the future. To embrace perspectives from all parts of the globe Participants at ISBR2023 were from 49 different countries from all regions of the globe.
