Non Technical Summary
Wyoming is consistently in the top 5 states with the highest suicide rate per capita. Nationally, suicide rates in agriculture may be as much as 5 times higher than the national average and double the rate of veterans. These numbers could be under-reported because some farm accidents may actually mask suicide attempts. If a Wyoming ag producer calls a suicide hotline number, chances are good that the hotline operator will not have anything beyond a very basic understanding of the stressors that accompany a life in agriculture. If a Wyoming ag producer makes an appointment with a mental health provider, that counselor or psychologist may be missing some of the context of the issues impacting the producer. This project will provide workshops and online training to hotline operators and mental health providers on the many different stressors (economic, weather, isolation, regulations and more) that may impact ag producers. Additionally, outreach material will be developed and distributed statewide (radio advertisements, print material and online methods) to inform ag producers of the many types of assistance that are available for stress-related concerns.
