Progress 09/01/23 to 08/31/24
Outputs Target Audience:Target audience for these projects is 23,000 corn and soybean growers and about 5,000 crop consultants that advise growers in the state of Nebraska about applying pesticides and using other methods for integrated pest management. Several hundred growers, crop consultants, industry representatives, and university extension educators participated in our Extension Field Days and Workshops to learn about integrated management of disease, insects, andweeds in agronomic and specialty crops across the state of Nebraska. Beekeepers participated in a number of education events about pollinator health. The Nebraska Extension Master Gardener Volunteer (NE-EMGV) programis a horticulture related volunteer training program based in 55 of 93 counties throughout Nebraska. The funding from this proposal is to be used to train additional Master Garners. Graduate students were involved in a number of education and outreach events. Changes/Problems:
Nothing Reported
What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?Extension Educators, Undergraduate and graduate students in entomology, weed science and plant pathology worked on projects supported by these funds and gained knowledge of current pest management practices of agronomic pests and pollinator protection practices. These individuals made presentations at Extension meetings and co-authored Extension publications. Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
IPM Implementation in Agronomic Crops Science based weed, disease and insect management information in agronomic crops (corn, soybean, sorghum, wheat, sugar beets, sunflowers, dry beans, alfalfa and popcorn) was delivered to clientele through multiple workshops, field days, newsletters, videos, publications and social media. Best management practices to reduce off-target dicamba injury was delivered to Nebraska clientele in several Nebraska Extension programs. Management of herbicide-resistant weeds in agronomic crops was accomplished by demonstration of the research plots during extension field days and other extension programs. IPM for Pollinator Health Summary of outputs: 2 public events, 3 beekeeping workshops, 161 open apiary field sessions, 12 virtual seminars, 11 in-person extension seminars, 3 academic lectures, 3 youth programs, 5 legislative meetings, 3 legislative testimonies (NE, MN) During this reporting period, this EIP project has helped local beekeeping groups establish teaching apiaries in 3new states (OK, IN, IL) and our Regional Great Plains Master Beekeeping Program now has "Open Apiaries" in 9 states (NE, IA, KS, MO, WY, OK, IN, IL, MI). Open Apiaries provide informal instruction focused on hands-on training and customized for seasonal/regional considerations. GPMB volunteer mentors and instructors who are Master level beekeepers meet monthly to review key management practices for the season and area, as beekeeping practices are significantly driven by local challenges, weather, and landscapes. There are currently 23 apiaries (7 in NE) involved and each monthly session from April to October is attended by 10-40 people. Each apiary has been provided guidance on establishing teaching apiaries and curriculum for hands-on instruction.

Changes/Problems:Co-PI Emily Stine is no longer employed by UNL What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?Graduate students and Extension faculty were provided opportunities to make presentations at multiple Nebraska Extension events and co-author Extension publications and newsletter articles. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? Results have been disseminated through workshops, field days, newsletter articles, video, social media, mass media, one-to-one interactions. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?- Update weed, insect, and plant disease management information in 2023 Guide for Weed, Disease, and Insect Management in Nebraska - Present weed, insect, and plant disease management information in extension meetings such as Crop Production Clinics, Crop Management Diagnostic Clinics, Soybean Management Field Days, Crop Scouting Clinics and other Nebraska Extension meetings - Publish weed, insect and plant disease management information throughout the year in CropWatch.unl.edu and marketjournal.unl.edu Present weed management information in 2022 North Central Weed Management Society and 2023 Weed Science Society of America annual meetings. - Weed Management Field Day to be held on June 29, 2022 - Weed Science School to be held in Nov 2022 - Co-PI Wu-Smart is now working with the following five collaborating beekeeping associations to establish open apiaries and offer in-field training for their association members, which may reach ~1,800 Midwest beekeepers: Omaha Bee Club (~106 members), Nebraska Beekeepers Association (~175 members), the Northeast Kansas Beekeepers Association (~600 members), Kansas Honey Producers Association (formerly The Kansas State Beekeepers Association) (~290 members); and the Missouri State Beekeepers Association (~625 members). And the Center for Rural Affairs will help provide targeted educational materials and exploratory beekeeping courses for Latinx and Tribal communities. Nine Open Apiary locations were established across the GPMB target area, ranging from Wyoming to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in April and May of 2022. Open Apiary and teaching sessions are informal unstructured gatherings with brief demonstrations, questions and answers, and time to get hands on experience with honey bees. Open apiary hours are designed to allow individuals to come and see management over the course of the beekeeping season. At each session GPMB members conduct comprehensive inspections of colonies and make seasonal management decisions. The next reporting period will have more progress on "open" teaching apiaries and the impact of improving these train-the-trainer and field training opportunities.
Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
- Science based weed, insect and plant disease management information in corn, soybean, sorghum, dry beans, sugar beets, sunflowers, and popcorn was delivered to clientele through multiple activities. - Best management practices to reduce off-target dicamba injury was delivered to Nebraska clientele in various extension programs - Management of herbicide-resistant weeds in agronomic crops was promoted by demonstration of the research plots during extension field days and other extension programs - Participants at 2022 Crop Production Clinics (8 meetings; 760 participants) 73% have increased knowledge of pest management; 74% have increased knowledge of disease management; 59% have increased knowledge of pesticide application techniques that limit off target movement of pesticides.
