Progress 06/15/21 to 06/14/24
Outputs Target Audience:The target audience for this project is low income veterans receiving care through the Durham VA Health System. During this reported period served 1700 participants with produce prescriptions. We destributed a total of$1,001,242.18 in funding between this grant and our original 2020 GusNIP grant. Changes/Problems:Working with the VA is challenging because it is such a large organization. We had to dramatically change our enrollment protocols to adapt to the VA's regulations. It took us over 1 year to execute the necessary agreements to implement Eat Well with the VA. However, once the program got set up, we were able to quickly enroll a large cohort of veterans and distribute the funds quickly and effectively. What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?

How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?RP has presented the Eat Well program for Veterans to many veteran stakeholder groups including the VA's Food Security Office. This project has laid the groundword for successive iterations of VA-based produce prescription programs. RP is now planning to impelment another program in partnerhship with the Durham VA as part of a randomized control trial to evaluate the impacts of the program on healthcare and healthcare utilization outcomes. Stay tuned! What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?

Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
RP successfully served over 1,700 eligible veterans with "Eat Well", the produce prescription program which provided $40/month to purchase fruits and vegetables. Participants redeemed their benefits by purchasing eligible fruits and vegetables at Food Lion using their MVP customer loyalty card. Participants receivedadditional funds to purchase healthy food, which reduced the financial barriers to purchasing and eating healthy food. RP distributed a total of$1,001,242.18 in healthy food assistance funds, which represents a significant increase in healthy food purchases for participants. The Eat Well program utilized Food Lion's MVP card to distribute funds without needed to make a SNAP purchase. This is a major improvement from RP's prior MVP-based programs, like SuperSNAP and Bull City Bucks. This technology improvement allowed RP to experiment with new ways to reach eligible participants.

Progress 06/15/22 to 06/14/23
Outputs Target Audience:The target audience for this project is low income veterans receiving care through the Durham VA Health System. During this reported period served 1700 participants with produce prescriptions. Changes/Problems:RP had to adapt its existing enrollment procedures to ensure that a sufficient number of veterans enrolled. This new enrollment procedure was highly succesfull and required more staffing costs for RP than were initially budgeted. RP has submitted a request to amend the budget to reflect this change. What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?

How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? We have shared the progress of our work with the VA to the VA Food Security Office and the Rockefeller Foundation. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? We anticipate spending down the remaining funds during the next reporting period and beginning the evaluation work with the Durham VA researchers.
Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
We expanded the reach of our RPRx-VA program by serving 1700 low-income veterans with produce prescriptions. These participants experienced greater access to eating healthy andincreased their purchase and consumption of fruits and vegetables. Our program leverages technology to distribute funds directly to participants quickly and easily via Food Lion's customer loyalty card program. Participants use the funds to purchase eligible items of thier choice at Food Lion stores that are convenient for them. We also executed a contract with the Durham VA to evaluate the program.

Progress 06/15/21 to 06/14/22
Outputs Target Audience:We are targeting patients of the Durham VA Health Care System with this program. Outreach is occuring through the VA's social work division. Our goal is to enroll between 1500-2000 veterans within the Durham VA catchment area which comprises Changes/Problems:A major challenge for this project has been securing an agreement with the Durham VA to implement the program. It took RP over a year to secure a legal agreement. Our biggest challenge at the moment is identifying a research partner who can work with us to evaluate the program using Durham VA data. What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?

What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?RP seeks more efficient methods of enrolling lots of veterans quickly. RP will focus its energies on identifying more streamlined ways of outreaching to and enrolling eligible veterans. RP will also continue to seek partnerships with researchers to evaluate the program's impact on participants' health and healthcare outcomes.
Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
During this reporting period, RP worked with Durham VA social workers to identify eligible veterans and enroll them into the program. During this period, 441 veterans were enrolled. RP used technology to increase the distribution of produce prescriptions. Veterans enrolled themselves through RP's online enrollment platform. VA social workers sent unique, single-use links directly to veterans who used the online link to enroll online. RP has engaged multiple researchers about partnering to evaluate the program. RP has yet to secure a concrete research partner.
