Non Technical Summary
Undergraduate student interns may:conduct fish, wildlife, and flora surveys using various types of equipment to obtain samples for identification, size, enumeration, and quality;conduct water quality and phytoplankton surveys for shellfish sanitation using various types of equipment to obtain samples;perform pre- and post-monitoring data for habitat restoration projects using various techniques;conduct biotoxin surveys by collecting mussels from various stations;conduct user surveys including the compilation, proofing and summarization of data;construct and repair habitat improvement structures;perform shoreline surveys to identify pollution sources;conduct fish propagation activities, including securing eggs and milt, and fertilizing, incubating, rearing and fish marking/tagging;examine and track commercial fishing harvest data to monitor compliance with fishery quotas;assist with the development of brochures, web pages and outreach materials; assist in the development of GIS shapefiles, feature classes and maps;enter data into various databases and produce simple summaries, analyses or reports based on those data;conduct habitat protection work that entails implementing Articles 15 (Stream Protection), 24 (Freshwater Wetlands Protection) and 25 (Tidal Wetlands Protection) of the Environmental Conservation Law;conduct field inspections of permitted projects to ensure compliance with permit conditions;use multiple GIS data layers, air photos, and other technologies to identify potential wetlands, and prepare draft approximate wetland boundary maps in ARCGIS; as well as to assist in stream/culvert location assessment, restoration planning, and other such tasks;perform field checks of wetland maps to confirm on the ground wetland boundaries, and revise map boundaries as needed based on delineation and assist with on regional map amendment projects to identify wetland not on the maps and prepare wetland boundary maps for amendments;Prepare for and participate in outreach and educational efforts, including I FISH NY events, giving presentations on fishing or ecology and assisting in fishing sessions; Review and summarize scientific literature and assist with lesson plans and other educational materials.Graduate student interns may:analyze and interpret biological information;analyze and interpret human dimension aspects of fish and wildlife conservation and management;develop, analyze and interpret public policy;analyze and interpret social, economic, and political aspects of fish and wildlife conservation and management;develop experimental designs to address key research questions associated with fish and wildlife conservation and management.If the nature of a specific internship requires driving, all candidates must possess a current valid driver's license. Use of DEC vehicles is subject to the policies established by the State of New York. Interns will also be required to follow all safety protocols laid out in state, agency, and Division guidelines and protocols.Awarded Start Date: 4/1/19Sponsor: NYS Department of Environmental Conservation
