Non Technical Summary
The 37th Conference of the International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG) will be held in Lleida, Catelonia, Spain from July 7 to July 12, 2019. Sharing the latest developments in creating and applying community genetic and genomic tools and resources to aid advancements in the productivity, health and wellbeing of commodity species (i.e. cattle, sheep, pigs, horses, poultry, and aquaculture) is a major focus of the ISAG conference. Functional annotation of animal genomes, gene editing, and microbiomes are topics that will be emphasized in the workshop sessions. The traditional ISAG conference format blends morning sessions of invited plenary talks with workshops of contributed papers, posters sessions, and social activities that highlight the host city or region. ISAG is popular in the animal molecular genetics community because of the camaraderie among researchers that develops at the conference due to the balance of opportunities for rigorous scientific exchanges and for socializing with international collaborators. Up to ten graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who are presenting research at the ISAG conference will be awarded bursaries to cover registration and travel expenses.

Goals / Objectives
The goal of this conference grant is to support travel bursaries for up to ten US graduate students or postdoctoral fellows who will present their research at the 37th ISAG conference in Lleida, Spain from July 7-12, 2019.
Project Methods
The core objective of the International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG) is to promote and stimulate scientific research and studies on animal hereditary research, and to facilitate the exchange of ideas and materials between researchers, on a non-profit basis. The Society is now structured around 22 Standing Committees (www.isag.us/committees.asp) whose mission is to organize specialized workshop sessions during the ISAG Conference where novel studies are presented and challenges related to these topics are discussed. We are organizing the 37th Conference of the International Society for Animal Genetics as a venue to foster scientific exchange among established researchers and early career investigators in animal genetics. Research abstracts will be submitted by delegates and those submitted by applicants for travel bursaries will be reviewed by the editorial team for Animal Genetics. Each editor will assign a score from 1-100 for an eligible abstract based on its scientific merit and relevance to ISAG. Each abstract will be reviewed by at least two editors. Scores will be averaged, abstracts ranked, and the Editor-in- Chief will forward recommendations for funding to the Executive Committee who will award the bursaries. All early career participants may choose to be a part of the poster competition, with awards for each abstract category. The Yoshi Suzuki Award is awarded for the best poster from among the bursary recipients.

Outputs
Target Audience: Animal genome researchers from the livestock, poultry, and aquaculture fields were reached through both the 37th Conference of the International Society for Animal Genetics and the interagency workshop on organismal sequencing, community resources and comparative genomics. Plant genome researchers were also reached at the comparative genomics workshop. Other genomics researchers were reached through the interactions among the steering committee of the comparative genomics workshop. In particular, the grant supported attendance at the events by scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students. Changes/Problems: Nothing Reported What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? This project provided both national and international venues for early career investigators to network with researchers in their discipline, present results of their research, and receive feedback on their work. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? The conference and workshop provided the venue for participating researchers and students to share their findings in animal, plant, and comparative genomics via poster and oral presentations. A manuscript synthesizing the strategic vision for the discipline of genomics is under review. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? Nothing Reported

Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? The 37th conference of the International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG) was held in Lleida, Spain from July 7-12, 2019. The editorial board of the Animal Genetics journal evaluated abstracts and selected bursary recipients based on the quality oftheir scientific communication. There were 10 US trainees whose travel to present their research at ISAG was supported by funds from this project. The 38th conference of the International Society for Animal Genetics will be completely virtual from July 26-30, 2021. The virtual platform to faciltitate scientific presentations, including those by US trainees, was partially supported by this grant. Researchers submitted 330 abstracts for poster presentations from which the 22 ISAG standing committees have selected oral presentations. An NHGRI/NIH, NIFA/USDA, and NSF interagency workshop on Perspectives in Comparative Genomics and Evolution was held from August 15-16, 2019 in Bethesda, MD. Travel expenses for thirteen scientists from the animal and plant genomics research communities were supported from this project. The steering committee subsequently spent 12 months preparing an article synthesizing the strategic vision for the discipline based onoutcomes from the workshop.
