Non Technical Summary
North Carolina State University (NCSU) and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) engages and responds thoughtfully and intentionally to the social and demographic changes that are transforming our State, Nation and global society. CALS intentionally integrates its efforts at achieving inclusive excellence into the core aspects of the college - its academic priorities, leadership, community engagement and organizational cultures. Every member of the college community has a stake in CALS's achievement of inclusive excellence. For CALS, diversity includes characteristics of race, age, color, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, national origin, migratory status, abilities, political affiliation, veteran status and socioeconomic background. It also includes differences in backgrounds (i.e. rural, suburban, and urban), ideas, thought, values and beliefs. In addition, diversity is associated with principles of inclusion and the creation of safe and supportive environments where differences are respected, particularly with regard to historically underrepresented groups and legally protected categories and characteristics by which individuals identify.CALS' strategic actions will revitalize efforts to achieve greater gains in access, diversity, outreach, equity and inclusion. Led by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, our efforts will allow the college to establish innovative goals, chart new pathways, assess progress and celebrate our successes.

Goals / Objectives
Goal 1: Improve and Maintain an Inclusive and Equitable College ClimateProviding all individuals with the opportunity to reach their full potential is about more than just compliance. Cultivating an inclusive campus culture that actively and intentionally engages diverse people, ideas, and perspectives creates opportunity for innovative academic, research and extension outcomes. CALS accomplishes this by supporting and expanding efforts to develop an all-encompassing culture of inclusion in CALS. These efforts foster success and a greater sense of belonging and respect.Goal 2: Cultivate Mutually Beneficial Community Partnerships through Community Engagement with an Emphasis on Historically and Currently Underserved CommunitiesMutually beneficial CALS-community partnerships further the mission of college to fulfill its core mission of serving the people of NC. CALS reaches beyond the campus walls and contributes to collaboration among community engagement initiatives that extend from academia, research and extension to community members and organizations. The resulting collaborative partnerships lead to dynamic CALS-Community initiatives that promote inclusivity, equity, and accessibility.Goal 3: Recruit, Retain, and Develop a Diverse CommunityAs a college community, we are committed to increasing diversity of all forms and to pursuing an equitable policy of access and opportunity that gives all students, staff and faculty the chance to excel. As a result of variances in populations, activities to recruit, retain and support a diverse community are wide-ranging and unique to the specific needs of each local community. CALS is committed to increasing the success of first-generation, rural, and underrepresented students throughout the preschool to professional school pathway. Pre-college initiatives reach communities to foster a culture of academic success for all students. Once students are enrolled in CALS, we provide programs that offer the academic support, mentoring and tutoring. We are committed to broadening staff, student and faculty recruitment outreach. Initiatives include equity and inclusion training for faculty search committees, along with efforts to promote existing college and university support programs and resources for students, staff and faculty.Goal 4: Support Innovative Scholarship and TeachingAs we work to create a more diverse, equitable and inclusive college, we also aim to advance research and pedagogy on these topics. Expanding knowledge and inspiring discovery is necessary for us to lead in producing bold researchers and innovative scholars. We aim to ensure diversity, equity and inclusion are foundational aspects of our educational programming and teaching methodology. Furthermore, we aim to value and support scholars who produce scholarly research on diversity, equity and inclusion
Project Methods
We use a broad range of activities, events and programs to work with CALS faculty, staff, students and stakeholders. To remain effective, we must constantly update our diversity and inclusion strategies. The best way to ensure that progress is to use a data-driven approach to make decisions. We will partner with University Offices and report data where applicable and not in violation of confidentiality. We will perform needs assessments to determine programmatic needs for the CALS community. Program design and development will involve extensive literature reviews to design theoretical frameworks and determine best practices. Conceptual frameworks and logic models will drive program implementation. All major programs will have formative and/or summative evaluations.
