Non Technical Summary
This project will expand and maintain an existing network of Lake Ontario and Sodus Bay buoys as part of the emerging Lake Ontario Observing System (LOOS). In preparation for the upcoming Cooperative Science Monitoring Initiative in Lake Ontario in 2018, the project will evaluate and retrofit if possible two or three YSI EMM 2.0 buoys for deployment in the near shore regions of Lake Ontario. One buoy (Oswego Station), will contain a meteorological station, temperature and wave height and direction sensors. It will replace the Titus buoyfunded through the Great lakes Observing System lost during the storms of 2016. A second system (Sodus Bay Station) with instrumentation for wave, water column temperature and lake water level will be placed at the mouth of the Channel to Sodus Bay (Sodus Bay Station). A sub-surface temperature array will provide information on hypolimnetic water inflow into and out of the bay important for the HAB prediction models currently being developed. A buoy with meteorological, temperature and wave sensors will also be deployed near the Oak Orchard creek outflow. It will provide information on nearshore currents needed for the US-EPA derived models on the nutrient flux within the nearshore zone of Lake Ontario.Awarded Start Date: 1/1/18Sponsor: NYS-DEC
