Non Technical Summary
The "Global AgLeader: Development of Leadership and Global Competency to Enhance Recruitment and Retention of Minority Students" project addresses the obstacles regularly faced in recruiting and retaining the students from minority communities in undergraduate and graduate agricultural programs. Though there are predictions of impressive job growth in agriculture, there is a documented lack of supply of trained workforce that can cater to the requirements of a rapidly transforming agriculture sector. But young students from minority communities are unaware of such job opportunities, have perceived entry barriers, and lack professional networks. With minority students in mind, the project will develop a forward-looking and multi-pronged approach by taking advantage of the fondness for social media and technology among younger generations. It will use web-based contents to help the students in forming professional social networks and in increasing their awareness about the career opportunities in agriculture. The project proposes international and domestic experiences at reputable organizations, mentoring, internships, and summer institutes to help students in career decisions. The project will improve the ability of the Texas State University's (Texas State) to i) provide better education to agricultural students with emphasis on minority students, and ii) cater to the needs of other stakeholders such as farmers and agribusinesses. It will also foster Texas State's links with reputable international agricultural institutions. Intended results from the project include: better recruitment/retention of minority students; and preparing a dynamic base of students with both technical skills and soft-skills required to lead in their chosen career.

Goals / Objectives
"Global AgLeader: Development of Leadership and Global Competency to Enhance Recruitment and Retention of Minority Students" is a project designed to improve agricultural education for students from underrepresented/minority groups such that it positively reflects in their recruitment and retention within institution as well as in their job market desirability for hiring institutions. The project will enhance students' career decision-making ability by making them aware of career paths in a changing agriculture sector, providing platform to develop their networking and leadership qualities, and expose them to international experiences in agriculture. Keeping in view the perceived entry barriers and lack of exposure of students from underrepresented communities to take up careers in agriculture, the project will collaborate with international academic and/or research institutions to impress upon them the diverse scope available to students of agriculture. The Project has 4 specific objectives that cater to the different Education Need Areas. The objectives are:increase awareness of career opportunities in the fields of agriculture among minority students;develop a professional leadership development program for undergraduate and graduate students;provide international and domestic career and experimental learning opportunities; anddevelop and implement an innovative international exchange program, focusing collaboration between Texas State and CGIAR institutes.
Project Methods
For each of the objectives proposed, following are the approaches and the institutional cooperative linkages that would be followed to achieve them. Objective 1: Increase awareness of career opportunities in the fields of agriculture among minority students. Activities developed to accomplish this objective will emphasize development of a state-of-the-art website, web-based interactive career aptitude exercises, web-based video clips, innovative use of professional social networking opportunities, and more enhanced and structured email messaging contacts with prospective students. Global AgLeader will result in a dramatic renovation of the website of the Department of Agriculture, Texas State University. Sponsored links will be developed for the website. These will include agriculture programs at other universities. Other related types of interest groups with some sort of related affinity to the fields of agriculture will be identified. These may include groups that target minority students who are looking for scholarships. Examples might include environmental justice websites, MANRRS (Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences), and others.A series of video clips will be developed. These clips will focus on various types of career opportunities available to graduates of agriculture programs. The emphasis will be to feature minority professionals in action, engaged in a variety of professional activities. Objective 2: Develop a professional leadership development program for undergraduate and graduate students Many undergraduate students do not view themselves as in a position to engage in leadership within their chosen profession. However, positioning oneself for positions of professional leadership is a very effective networking mechanism to be competitive in either securing the best employment or for admission to top graduate programs. Global AgLeader will work to engage students in committees of the major professional associations in agriculture and provide funds for travel to participate on the student activities and other committees.Global AgLeader will organize a two-week only intensive summer institute at Texas State focusing on leadership development and international agriculture. Resource speakers from various USDA agencies, U.S. universities, private sector, and international agricultural research organizations will be invited. Several distinguished faculty from various land-grant universitiesare expected to participate as resource speakers, which will also further enhance Texas State's linkage with land-grant universities. Objective 3: Provide international and domestic career and experimental learning opportunitiesAn internship program will be developed and made available to undergraduate and graduate students. Ten interns (including two for international placement) will be selected on a competitive basis. These interns will be placed at various national agencies (including USDA agencies), private farms/firms, and international organizations. The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) will play a lead role in placing interns at various international organizations. The internship will be implemented in summer as part of an Ag Internship course. Objective 4: Develop and implement an innovative international exchange program, focusing collaboration between Texas State and CGIAR institutes. Activities to achieve this objective will be implemented in collaboration with the IFPRI, Bangladesh Agricultural University, and Texas State (Department of Agriculture as well the Office of International Affairs). A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed between IFPRI and Texas State.A two-week long training program will be implemented at the Bangladesh Agriculture University. Resource speakers will include experts from various Asian region (including Bangladesh andthe Philippines), IFPRI and Texas State. Asia is home of various international agricultural research institutes (including International Rice Research Institute, International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, WorldFish Center), and Bangladesh has regional offices of several CGIAR research centers. Global AgLeader will select and sponsor ten students to participate in this training as part of a study-abroad program. These students will attend the Study-Abroad program to be held in Bangladesh and visit various agricultural research institutes in Asia (including International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines). One faculty member from Bangladesh Agricultural University will visit Texas State during Fall 2018 or Spring 2019 to offer a course on "Agricultural Developemnt in Asia" and to prepare students and provide training (about the history, current events, and challenges) for those students traveling to Bangladesh and other Asian countries for the Study-Abroad/Summer Institute.
