Non Technical Summary
The leadership team for this grant proposed to develop a planning grant leading to the development of an SCRI CAP grant to support US strawberry growers, improve rural economies, and provide consumers with a fresh, safe, nutritious and affordable product. The planning grant project proposes to bring together in a holistic manner multiple scientists, extension workers, industry representatives, and production representatives from multiple institutions in multiple states to assess the researchable challenges and needs of the US strawberry industry to improve its competitiveness and long-term sustainability. The project revolves developing a robust survey instrument to understand the researchable and education needs for production, harvesting, marketing, and economic needs of strawberry growers and potential strawberry growers. The project will be led by a team of scientists, extension workers, and commercial industry representatives, and consulted by a board of advisors comprised of key stakeholders in the US strawberry industry. Based upon the expressed needs of the US strawberry industry, as assessed via the tested survey instrument, the project leadership team will develop an SCRI CAP grant to address key aspects of production such as crop development, crop management, and the crop system environmental footprint, key aspects of the distribution system including harvest maturity, post harvest storage and transport, product safety and nutrition, and key consumer and market aspects such as improving the economic vitality of farms and rural communities, and the local seasonal and year-around availability of strawberries for consumers.

Goals / Objectives
The long-term goal of this SCRI project is to support the sustainability and competitiveness of the US strawberry industry by advancing regionally appropriate, locally developed, research-based technology and information. This SCRI Planning Project will draw on the expertise of a multi-disciplinary and multi-state group of researchers, extension specialists, growers, consultants, and industry representatives to develop a strategic plan to address the critical needs for research, outreach, and education resulting in a SCRI-CAP proposal to support the sustainability of the strawberry production system.
Project Methods
We will achieve the project goals with the following methods:Grower survey - a survey will be developed among project leaders, and vetted with the grower/industry advisory board. The survey will be distributed to growers throughout strawberry workshops and conferencesinthe fall and late winter. Results will be analyzed anddistributedin early spring.Full proposal development - montly project leaders meetings and quarterly advisory board meetings will occur to discuss project progress, survey results, identifypriorities, plan an in-person project conference/meeting, and write a full SCRI project. At the in-person meeting, the majority of the full proposal will be written.

Outputs
Target Audience:The target audience reached during this reporting period included U.S. strawberry growers and production managers, strawberry grower associations, nurserymen producing strawberry plugs or plants, conusultants, extension educators, university educators, and research scientists working in the strawberry industry. An industry-wide survey was conducted Dec 2016-Feb 2017 to identify research and outreach needs of the strawberry industry. The survey was announced throughout the country at grower meetings, conferences and workshops, newsletters, strawberry grower associations, Facebook, Twitter, a trade industry article and a press release was made that was published in the Packer. Over 360 survey responses were received. A meeting with industry stakeholders and project collaborators was conducted to discuss project results and identify priorities to develop a two SCRI project proposals, one on production systems and one on nursery production. A trade industry article was developed based on the meeting participation and outcomes. Results of the national survey and project work were shared at national meetings. Changes/Problems:The proposal submitted in 2018 for SCRI consideration provided significant constructively critical comments to revise the proposal. The proposal previously lacked some focus but is now much more focused to serve underserved farmers with small or medium scale production for local or regional markets, and alternative-system producers who are not served by state check-off funds or large national/multi-national companies. The overall goal of the project remains the same - to support and advance the sustainability of the US strawberry industry, to promote sustainability and rural prosperity, and to provide an expanding consumer market with a safe and nutritious fruit product. What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?A national workshop on the status, sustainability and future of the US strawberry industry was conducted in September 2017with the intent of developing a common set of knowledge and understanding of the industry and growers needs among scientists and extension workers. Through frequent listserv email communication, new information, publications, and discussions were held among the project collaborators. The three project leader meetings during the two years of the project provided professional and leadership development education. The project was created and proposal written through a team concept with 5 project teams, each with a team leader and supporting cooperators, and one leadership team. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? Results of the survey have been shared with growers, nurseries, extension educators, and others through strawberry grower association newsletters for the North American Strawberry Growers Association, North Carolina Strawberry Association, Virginia Strawberry Association and through an article in the Fruit Growers News. Project information was also shared with the scientific community through two posters presented at the 2017 American Society of Horticultural Sciences annual conference. The results of the national workshop on the status, sustainability and future of the US strawberry industry were developed into a proceedings and refereed publication accepted for press in a national/international journal. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? Nothing Reported

Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? ·Input was gained from growers, managers, and extension educators/advisors on key constraints to production. ·Results of the national survey have been presented at national meetings. ·Progress and achievements of the SCRI planning project were presented at national meetings. ·An Advisory Committee was developed, comprised of growers, grower associations, and a nursery, a buyer and an agricultural product company. ?·With input from Advisory Committee and project participants, two proposed projects have been developed ·Advisory Committee and key local, regional and national stakeholders were informed of planned grant project objectives. ·Two SCRI proposals and Stakeholder Relevance Statements were developed based on survey results and the stakeholder Advisory Committee with support from local, regional, and national stakeholders -A new proposal direction was created in summer 2018 based upon reviews from the SRS and full proposal submission. A new letter of intent and stakeholder relevance statement was submitted in December 2018. The new proposal represents the needs and seeks to serveapproximately 80% of the strawberry growers on small and medium scalefarms in the US in states where there are no check-off supports or large corporate interests, and the growers are largely underserved. -Three scienitific and techanical advisors were added to the project not as collaborators but as advisors. The technical advisors are recongized scholars in the field of small fruits research, extension, stakeholder engagement, and education. ·Awareness of the project continues to expand among growers extension, and research stakeholders and the strawberry producers and allied supporting companies in the US.
