Progress 08/15/16 to 08/14/19
Outputs Target Audience:The target audiences of the Aquaculture Boot Camp-2 program (ABC-2) are 1) New and beginning aquaculture/aquaponic farmers with less than 10 years of farming experience (about half of them have less than 5 years); 2) Other new farmers attempting to diversify their existing farming enterprise; 3) Potential future aquaculture/aquaponic farmers: students and those without a family farming history; and 4) Educators and others who influence the farming decisions made by potential fish farmers. Changes/Problems:

What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? We offerednew and next generation farmers 3-I levels, 3 areas and 3 types of integrated training in aquaculture/aquaponic production and business management strategies. The "3-I levels" are: Intensive, an in-depth level involving immersion in a year-long hands-on training and classroom/mentoring program; Intermediate, a mid-level involving participation in a variety of learning activities and workshops; and Introductory, a general or entry level where sharing of information is the goal, and involving participation in the ABC-2 online education and webinars. The "3 areas" are general/traditional aquaculture, recirculating aquaculture/aquaponics, and related business and marketing. The "3 types" are hands-on, classroom/mentoring, and internet/webinar. Through the Intensive and Internediate program, 36 intensive training classes, 4 annual conferences, 3 bus tour, 36 resource videos, and 13 additional informative workshops, 12 internships, 20 issues of newsletters and 1 issue of an aquaculture magazine were provided to new and beginning farmers. A total of 1002 new and beginning farmers were trained or involved through/in these opportunities. Other than above opportunities and in Introductory program, 540 peoplewere trained through Field days/Farm & facility visits/Trips; 2396 people gained knowledge through visiting the ABC-2 website; 1212 people gained knowledge through our emails; 411 people received support and information through phone system; 86 people received support and information through one-on-one training. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?ABC-2 information was published and disseminated to communities through 36 ABC/OAA and ABC/WAAresource videos posted on ABC-2 website, twentyissues of newsletters and one issue of magazine, seven conference papers, and manybrochures/pamphlets, fact sheets, worksheets and professional presentations. Workshop presentations and resources are updated regularly on the ABC-WI and UWSP-NADF ABC websites. An ABC-WI social media group was developed using the UWSP-NADF Facebook site for photo sharing, updates, resources and non-workshop communication. The ABC-2 will publish the data collected from the evaluation surveys distributed to the ABC-2 intensive students. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?

Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
The success and accomplishments of the ABC-2 program is attributed to the "3-I" levels (Intensive, Intermediate, Introductory), three areas (aquaponics, aquaculture, and related business and marketing) and three types (hands-on, classroom/mentoring, and internet/webinar) of integrated training and multi-faceted approach. For the ABC-2 Intensive, 12 monthly informative educational modules and materials in aquaculture/aquaponic production and twelve monthly educational modules and materials in business and marketing were developed/refined and delivered in 2017 in Ohio. These modules were modified/replicated and delivered in 2018 and 2019 in Ohio and Wisconsin, based on the needs of the new participants. Each module was designed to coincide with seasonal activities on a typical aquaculture/aquaponic farm so that a participatory hands-on training event could simultaneously occur each month. A total of 52 hands-on practice projects were completed by the intensive students in OH and WI. Mentors were provided to these intensive-level students through partnerships with the Ohio Aquaculture Association (OAA) and Wisconsin Aquaculture Association (WAA), which offered mentoring leadership, consulting, tutoring, and guidance students. Each graduate student prepared a PowerPoint presentation about who they are, why they joined ABC-2, what they learned, and what they plan to do upon course completion. Eighty-one participants from the three-year classes fulfilled their training program and were awarded with certificates of completion. The ABC-2 Intensive level program met its original goal: 81 new farmer students from ABC-2 Intensive class were trained and graduated in Ohio and Wisconsin, and ~50% of those students have started their new aqua-farms or operations. Based on a recent survey, a total of 38 new aquaculture/aquaponics farms or operations have been created by ABC-2 Intensive students. For example, one of the ABC Intensive graduates is now in his seventh year producing more than 35,000 lbs fish/year with revenues of more than $125,000. Another ABC-2 graduate has built an aquaculture facility that is able to produce 80,000 lbs of tilapia; one launched a commercial version of an indoor shrimp farm last year with a side of dedicated to aquaponics; and yet another of our ABC students has played an important role in developing Superior Fresh, a multimillion dollar fish farm and aquaponic greenhouse capable of producing 160,000 pounds of Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout and up to 2 million pounds of varietal and leaf lettuce per year in Wisconsin. Thirteen aquaculture/aquaponic workshops and three aquaculture bus tours were offered and conducted for both the Intensive and Intermediate ABC-2 students in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Four ABC-OAA and WAA annual conferences, which were geared toward new fish farmers, were organized and held for Intensive, Intermediate, and Introductory ABC-2 students. An ABC-2 website was created to sustainably support the target audience and 36 digital videos of ABC-2 Intensive training classes and practices were developed and posted on the ABC website and distributed to all the "3-I" levels of new aquaculture/aquaponic farmers in Ohio and Wisconsin. ABC-2 Introductory provided a unique Internship program with apprentice-type training opportunities for next generation aquaculture/aquaponic farmers; twelve high school students who were interested in aquaculture and aquaponics received ABC-WAA internships. Twenty newsletters and one magazine focused on aquaculture/aquaponics were created/published and delivered to new and beginning farmers in Ohio and Wisconsin. Seven conference papers and manybrochures/pamphlets, fact sheets andworksheets were published as part of the learning materials. An ABC-WI social media group was developed using the UWSP-NADF Facebook site for ABC-2 resources and non-workshop communication and photo sharing. The Wisconsin Sea Grant Aquatic Sciences Chronicle featured ABC-2 in their summer 2018 issue. Additionally, ABC-2 Introductory provided training and information through facility tours, individual and group counseling, phone, and email. As a result, the ABC Intermediate program surpassed the projected number of participants by 130.25%, and the Introductory program surpassed the participation goal by 394.50%. That means that 921 new and beginning farmers gained knowledge of aquaculture/aquaponic production and new technologies by participating in ABC Intermediate workshops, conferences, and bus tours; and 4,645 participants gained new knowledge by accessing ABC Introductory, which included training through field days/farm and facility visits/trips and conferences, visiting the ABC-2 website, our emails/phone system, and one-on-one training.
