Non Technical Summary
This project will result inboth anational strategic plan on environmental sustainability on behalf of the Cooperative Extension System, and assistancewith the transition of the Western Region Extension Sustainability Summit held in 2013 to the National Extension Sustainability Summit (NESS) to be held in Portland, Oregon on April 5-7, 2016. Sessions are organized around the five themes of Climate/Air, Food, Energy, Land, and Water and the nexus among all themes. This investment will enhance NIFA's approach to sustainability and alignment with the pilot Science Outcome Committee (SOC) on Environmental Sustainability. This activity will acquire direct stakeholder input and position Extension to participate and apply for integrated grants through the Agency's competitive programs. The plan will address key sustainability issues, programs, professional development, and future directions to be used by state Extension Services to enhance their approach to sustainability and subsequent programming.Draft ideas from the 2016 NESS Summit will be collected and carried to the Association of Natural Resource Extension Professionals/National Association of Community Development Extension Professionals (ANREP/NACDEP) Conference in June 2016 for further vetting. Such information will guide the development of a national survey and subsequent plan that state Extension Services will find useful for sustainability program planning and development.

Conduct lightning sessions at 2016 Extension Sustainability Summit to gather baseline information regarding environmental sustainability successes and needs in ExtensionTransition lightning session results into questionniare at 2016 National Association of Community Development Extension Professionals (NACDEP) meeting.Administer questionaire on environmental sustainability in Extension to Extension services nationwide.Combine results from lightning sessions and questionnaire into a strategic plan for environmental sustainability in Extension.Publish results in the Journal of Extension and through a report to be shared via the Western Rural Development Center, as well as other participating partners.
Project Methods
Facilitated lightning sessions at the 2016 Extension Sustainability Summit, recorded and coded by session chairs. Results verified/editedby National Network forSustainable Living Education group at the 2016 joint ANREP/NACDEP conference.Quantiative survey administered by Extension Sustainability intern andanalyzed using SPSS by Roslynn Brain (PI) and intern. Results summarized by Dr. Brain and developed into national strategic plan with assistance from Dr. Cathy Elliottt at University of Maine.

Outputs
Target Audience:The target audience for this project included Extension educators nationwide. The 2016 Extension Sustainability Summit aimed to provide an avenue for Extension specialists and county educators to transition the ongoing conversations around Extension sustainability outreach into a national action plan for increased Extension outreach. Sixty-one attendees heard from 31 different presenters during the summit. Following the summit and as an outcome of the summit lightning (brainstorming) sessions, a national sustainability outreach in Extension needs assessment was designed and administered to the Extension director in every state (with a request to send to all Extension educators statewide), along with five national Extension associations: ANREP, NACDEP, NNSLE, National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, and NACAA. 1,693 Extension specialists and county Educators responded to the national survey. Changes/Problems:Although the approach did not change, the timing underwent a major change (needs assessment dissemination in January 2017 instead of early Fall 2016), due to the PI having a child and taking maternity leave September 30 2016-January 1 2017. What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?National needs assessment results are feeding into selected topics for the 2019 approvedjoint Climate Science Initiative, National Network for Sustainable Living Education, and National Extension Energy Initiative summit. The summit planning committee consists of a team from University of Florida Extension. Results are anticipated to be presented at future NACDEP and similar conferences, as well as webinars such as the Climate Learning Network. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? Results will be disseminated to Extension directors in every state(who will recieve both a national and state-specific results report) along with five national Extension associations and USDA NIFA in July 2017. Results were also shared at the state community development program leaders meeting at the CDS/NACDEP conference in Big Sky June 2017. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? Nothing Reported

Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? All but the final goal were accomplished. The final goal wasaccomplished in June(analyzing and publishing results were delayed as the PI had a child in September 2016). Lightning session results were analyzed and published in the Extension Sustainability Summit Outcomes and Impacts Report (https://wrdc.usu.edu/files-ou/ESS16_EvalSum.pdf). Lightning sessions were then transitioned into questions for a national needs assessment during the 2016 JuneNACDEP meeting by state community development specialists. The needs assessment isavailable for viewing athttps://usu.co1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_1Xp7z9d4e4v1h1b.The questionnaire was administered to Extension directors and associations nationwide in January 2017. Over 1,600 responses were obtained which are currently being analyzed and transitioned into graphically designed form, to be administered to state Extension directors, USDA NIFA, as well as national associations in June or July 2017. In summer 2017, results were submitted for publication in the Journal of Extension and Western results have already been accepted for publication in the Western Rural Development Center's Rural Connections Fall 2017 publication.

Progress 06/01/16 to 02/28/17

Outputs
Target Audience:We (intern and myself) have reached out to Extension employees running sustainability-focused Extension outreach programs across the USA (every state). 90 different programs have been submitted for our national database to-date. In January, we will be conducting a national needs assessment on sustainability outreach in Extension. The instrrument is complete and has been piloted among the Community Development Leaders Extension team, as well as the National Network for Sustainable Living Eduation group. Changes/Problems:No major changes have occured. What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? One intern was trained for this project and is gathering information for a national database of sustainability-focused Extension programs. Also, the National Extension Sustainability summit provided a professional development venue for all attendees (over 60 attendees). How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? The 2016 Extension Sustainability Summit outcomes and impacts report is now published through the Western Rural Development Center website. Further results will be distributed through national Extension organizations and eXtension. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?I plan to administer the national survey, analyze results, and develop and publish a strategic plan based on the results.

Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? Lightning sessions were completed during the 2016 Extension Sustainability Summit, and the results have been transitioned into a questionnaire that was piloted at the 2016National Association of Community Development Extension Professionals (NACDEP) meeting. The questionnaire is set to be administered in January.
