Non Technical Summary
This project targets historically underrepresented students in agriculture and natural resource sciences and seeks to recruit, educate and graduate minority undergraduate scholars. Opportunities to maintain a pathway for future professionals, scientists, and practitioners in schools of agriculture and natural resources will heavily depend on the ability of colleges and universities to recruit students from historically underrepresented populations. This proposal leverages newly passed state legislation (Tennessee Promise) that provides two-years of free community college tuition to Tennessee residents to recruit underrepresented students into Forestry through articulation agreements with local community colleges. By educating, developing and refocusing underrepresented student interests in natural resources the Department of Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries (FWF) will serve as a conduit that addresses the workforce demands for expertise relevant to USDA mission areas. MSP scholars will complete a rigorous curriculum designed to promote experiential learning opportunities through undergraduate research and professional internship experiences. Coupled with an innovative model for mentoring and monitoring scholars, this proposal provides the support structure to ensure that MSP scholars persist and excel. These activities fall under the Farm Bill Priority Area of Renewable Bioenergy, Natural Resources, and Environment. At the completion of this project, we anticipate placing 9underrepresented scholars directly into the workforce in the fields of Resource Management or Urban Forestry.

Goals / Objectives
This project addresses the Baccalaureate degree level in Natural Resource Science Training, scholars will major in Forestry with a concentration in Resource Management or Urban Forestry. By educating, developing and refocusing underrepresented students in Natural Resources Science, the Department of Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries (FWF) will serve as a conduit to address workforce demands for expertise relevant to USDA mission areas.
Project Methods
The Project Director (Dr. Jean-Philippe) currently serves as a mentor for high school seniors going through the Tennessee Promise selection process. During Tennessee Promise general informational selection meetings each year, students will be presented with an overview of the MSP scholars program covering 1) tuition, 2) internships, 3) service learning, 4) mentoring, 5) professional develop and 6) career opportunities. Interested students will complete an application during the spring semester of their first year at the community college. Applications will be reviewed during the spring semester and selected scholars will be invited to participate in interviews designed to determine the scholar's interest in pursuing a FWF degree, financial need, and aptitude to be successful. Finalists will be notified prior to starting their second year at the community college. Preferences will be given to first-generation, underrepresented and underserved and or non-traditional students interested in the Forestry MSP. Ideal MSP scholars will have >3.0 GPA at the time of the applying and be on-track to complete their associate's degree. Mr. Craig Pickett Jr., serves as the CASNR Coordinator for Student Life and Diversity Programs. He coordinates the College's efforts for recruitment and retention of underrepresented and unserved students; thus he will be the direct contact for UT-CASNR Forestry MSP students.?

Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? In the Pre-award year (2016-2017) and Year 1 of funding (2017-2018), Transfer Tranistion Guides were obtained with three 2-year community college (CCs) including curricular pathways to streamline time to graduation. Cohort 1 (4 scholars) was selected in Year 2 (2018-2019) and Cohort 2 (3 scholars) was selected in Year 3 (2019 -2020) from all three CCs. The scholars participated in academic year and summer internships, experiential learning and conference attendance as planned in the proposal. These students graduate from their respective CCs in May 2018, 2019 & 2020. Additional opportunities for work study and summer internships have grown out of positive relationships with the primary investigators on the grant and from strong student work ethic. b) The reasons established objectives were not met, if applicable; Established objectives were met as planned in the proposal, with the exception of scholars' participation in the Kids U summer camp. As the grant project evolved, a number of high quality internship opportunities emerged for scholars over the summer that the project management team deemed as more beneficial to the academic and professional development of the scholars. These opportunities allowed for multiple internship placements for each scholar, therefore the Kids U programming element was removed; c) A listing of any graduated MSP Forestry Fellow, new curricula, or other outputs; Mr. Korey Kinsler and Mr. John Sise (fall of 2020 graduates).

Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? During the 2019-2020 academic calendar year, the Forestry Fellow Multicultural Scholars Program (MSP) at the Institute of Agriculture at the University of Tennessee accomplished four main goals: 1. Admit and support Cohort #2 during their transition to UT 2. Connect Forestry Fellows to the field through conference attendance, internships, and fieldwork 3. Work with dedicated liaisons at each community college to assist with recruiting efforts 4. Recruit cohort #3 for the 2020 fall semester During this academic year in the fall 2019 semester, interviews with three internship supervisors and administration, conference surveys for all forestry students that attend five conferences and focus group with cohort 1 were conducted . Student attendees were survied on their satisfaction with their conference attendance, value of these specfic conference as compared to others attended, and the level of knowledge and experience gained. During the spring 2020 semester, MSP coummunity college liaisons were interviewed to determine what their experience has been working with the program thus far and focus group with cohort 2 to explore their transition to UT from their community colleges and their experience with the program thus far were conducted. The evaluation activities for the 2019-2020 academic year reveal that the MSP Forestry Fellows Program has accomplished its goals. The students are doing well at UT, progressing in their major towards a degree in urban forestry, and feel connected to the field of urban forestry. Also, the students have excelled in their internships based on the input from their internship supervisors.
