Non Technical Summary
This project will encompass research and planning to document a comprehensive site history of Muir Woods, inventory existing landscape conditions, analyze and evaluate the cultural landscape to identify characteristics and features warranting preservation, and provide treatment recommendations to preserve, enhance, and adapt the historic landscape in the context of current park management. Together, this research and planning will support long-term management of the Muir Woods cultural landscape. The research and planning will be based on findings of the Historic Resource Study for Muir Woods National Monument (2007), and will follow NPS 28: Cultural Resource Management Guideline and The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. The research will also be informed by the Golden Gate National Recreation Area/Muir Woods National Monument Draft General Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement of October 2011 (or the final version as it is issued).

Goals / Objectives
This project will encompass research and planning to document a comprehensive site history of Muir Woods, inventory existing landscape conditions, analyze and evaluate the cultural landscape to identify characteristics and features warranting preservation, and provide treatment recommendations to preserve, enhance, and adapt the historic landscape in the context of current park management.
Project Methods
The project study area is the landscape within the National Monument boundaries. Research will focus on the portion of Muir Woods within the National Register boundary, encompassing 427 acres that includes the original monument parcel and four additions made between 1921 and 1934.The research will also address the following parcels and areas:1. Kent west buffer tract2. Lower monument area that includes the parking lot parcel (NPS lease from State of California), Kent entrance tract, and the church tract3. State of California park lands adjoining the National Monument, including the Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railway Tract and Kent east buffer tract, and Kent south buffer tract. Because these areas are not owned by the NPS, the recommendations on significance and treatment will be advisory. The study will also address the larger setting of Muir Woods National Monument, including Mount Tamalpais State Park and Muir Woods Road. The Druid Heights/Camp Monte Vista tract outside of the National Monument boundaries that includes the Conlon A venue area and third Muir Woods Inn is not part of this scope of work. This landscape will be addressed in a separate task agreement.
