Non Technical Summary
The plant and seed breeding/improvement programs of the NC Agriculture Research Service release numerous and various germplasm for use by both the farmer and seed industry. NCFSPI seeks to promote and safeguard the germplasm developed by the various plant breeding projects. It serves as a vital link between plant breeders and the seed growers in the maintenance, multiplication, distribution, and promotion of new and improved plant cultivars. Plant breeding projects of the NC ARS range from blackberries to wheat. A partial list would include barley, corn, cotton, cucumbers, forage grass, oats, ornamentals, shrubs, peaches, peanuts, soybeans, sweetpotatoes, tobacco, triticale, and watermelon. Future relases releases may inlcude turfgrass. Most require a system to increase plants and/or seed which is the purpose of the foundation seed oraganizations in each state. To maintian genetic integirty of the cultivar, certification stantards are followed and they are crop specific.

Goals / Objectives
Our goal is to support the North Carolina seed industry by maintaining and making available high quality plants and seed to the growers of North Carolina. High quality includes genetic identity, high purity and germination, minimum disease, and free of noxious weed seed. Once a new cultivar is released by NC Agricultural Research Service then that breeder seed will be used to produce foundation seed, then registered seed, and then certified seed. This should take no longer than 3 years. A second goal is to promote new public cultivars that perform well in North Carolina via news media, reserach reports, etc.
Project Methods
The North Carlina Foundatin Seed Producers,Inc. (NCFSPI) will take breeder seed, plants, or root stock and provide for increase. Private growers may be contracted to grow foundation seed. Some seed increases will occur on research stations. This will depend on the crop and the quantity of seed available. To meet certification standards, the increases will be rogued for off-type plants. NCFSPI will condition seed of small grains ad soybeans in a manner that ensures seed viability, genetic purity, and free from weed seed. NCFSP will apply for certification with NCCIA.
