What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? We have had about 20 undergraduates and seven graduate students work on these projects. They have learned valuable research skills, including study design, recruitment, data collection, data analysis, manuscript writing, and presentation of research. Additionally, I have given severaltalks about the importance of sibling relationships for 4-H leaders around the state of Missouri. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? For academic audiences, the results have been presented at conferences and published in manuscripts. For the general public, there have been news stories about the research and I have given several talks to the community as well as podcasts. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?

Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
1) To investigate the roles of older sisters in adolescent girls' romantic relationship and sexuality development (collaborating with Dr. Nicole Campione-Barr, Psychological Sciences). My colleague and I collected two waves of data from mothers and her older and younger daughters. We have presented our findings at several research conferences, and published two papers, and have several papers in progress. Further, we piloted a measure on adolescents' disclosure of information to parents and siblings, and these data were used as preliminary findings for an NSF grant that was funded (I am the Co-PI). Further, my research on this topic had several media placements, including nbcnews.com. 2) To investigate the roles of older siblings in Latino adolescents' sexual health outcomes (collaborating with Dr. Maria Len-Rios [School of Journalism], Dr. Gus Carlo [Human Development and Family Studies], and Dr. Lynne Cooper [Psychological Sciences]). My colleagues and I collected data from over 1,300 undergraduates and have had several conference presentations and manuscripts using these data. Graduate students have used these data for their dissertations and undergraduate students have used these data for their honors theses. We are still submitting conference proposals and manuscripts using these data. 3) To examine the role of older siblings' in Latino adolescents' healthy psychological, intellectual, social, and emotional development (collaborating with Dr. Edna Alfaro, Texas State University-San Marcos). My colleague and I collect data from 243 Latina/o students from a Hispanic serving university in South Texas. We have published many manuscripts using these data and presented at conferences. We are still submitting manuscripts from these data. We have submitted one NIH RO1 grant proposal that was scored and resubmitted it 3 times. Unfortunately, it was never funded. Currently, we are working on other grant proposals that examine the role of siblings helping one another cope with stressors. Several of our manuscripts from our Texas study are used for preliminary data.

What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? In the past year, I have worked with7 undergraduate students and 6 graduate students. They worked with me on my research projects and publications. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?I presented work at the National Council on Family Relations, a conference that is attended by many therapists, practioners, and extension agents. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?Goal 1: Continue publishing on this topic. Goal 2: Collect longitudinal data from Latina/o young adults and write conference proposals and manuscripts. Goal 3: I will continue publishing on this topic and submit two large grant proposals.
Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
Goal 1: At two conferences this year, Ihad several presentations that would fall under this goal. I also had two publications and one book chapter about sisters influence on adolescent girls' sexuality development and romantic relationships. Goal 2: I collected more data from Latina/o young adults and am examining how their cultural and family experiences are associated with their romantic relationships. I also had one publication that would fall under this goal. Goal 3: I collected data for this and submitted conference presentations.

I will submit two more publications from this project. 2) To investigate the roles of older siblings in Latino adolescents' sexual health outcomes. I will be collecting longitudinal data on this and will publish findings from our cross-sectional study of 300 Latino young adults. 3) To examine the role of older siblings' in Latino adolescents' healthy psychological, intellectual, social, and emotional development. I will submit a grant proposal to NSF in July 2019.
Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
1) To investigate the roles of older sisters in adolescent girls' romantic relationship and sexuality development (collaborating with Dr. Nicole Campione-Barr, Psychological Sciences). I had two publications accepted using the data that I collected for this project. 2) To investigate the roles of older siblings in Latino adolescents' sexual health outcomes We have collected data from over 1,400 undergraduates (350 Latino undergraduates) and are beginning to analyze the data. Additionally, my colleague and I have collected data from 300 Latino young adults on their romantic relationships, cultural experiences and values, and sexual behaviors. We are beginning to work on papers from these data. My colleague and I received a $5000 grant from the Family Process Institute and $7,500 from an internal department grant to fund a 3 month longitudinal study of Latino young adults' romantic relationships, cultural experiences, sexual behaviors, and wellbeing. 3) To examine the role of older siblings' in Latino adolescents' healthy psychological, intellectual, social, and emotional development. I have submitted three publications relevant to this goal. Additionally, I resubmitted a grant to NICHD in June 2018.

What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?Goal 1: a) I will prepare at least 2 manuscripts for publication. b) I will submit at least one conference proposal for the Society for Research in Child Development. Goal 2: a) I will complete data collection. b) I will prepare conference proposals. c) I will prepare at least two manuscripts for publication. Goal 3: a) I will resubmit my NIH R01 proposal examining the positive role of older siblings on Mexican-origin adolescents' physical health and educational outcomes.
Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
Goal 1 Accomplishments: a) I am continuting to collect one year follow-up data from our project on sisters' influence on adolescent girls' sexuality development. Data collection will be completed in April 2016. b) I am presenting a poster about adolescent girls' communication with their sisters at the Society for Research on Adolescence conference in Baltimore, MD on 3/31/16. c) I submitted a paper examining the content of sisters' messages about dating and sexuality. Unfortunately, the paper was rejected. I am revising the paper and will submit it to another journal. Goal 2 Accomplishments: a) My research group has an article published using focus group data we collected on this topic. The article examines Latino adolescents' media use and their perspectives on romantic relationships (Len-Rios, Streit, Killoren, Deutsch, Cooper, & Carlo, 2016). b) I have a paper under review examining college students' communication about sex with siblings and best friends and how this communication is associated with sexual attitudes and values. c) We have received funding and are beginning to collect data from Latino college students (Dominican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Mexican) around the U.S. on health and adjustment. I have included measures on family relationships and sexual and relationship health. I will begin to analyze these data this summer and will write several manuscripts. Goal 3 Accomplishments: a) I submitted a R01 grant to NIH to examine the role of older siblings in Mexican American adolescents' physical health and educational outcomes. I received a very good score and will resubmit in July. b) I have a paper under 3rd review examining how Mexican American college students define youth success and identify contributors to youth success. Findings from this paper have revealed aspects of development that Mexican Americans identify as important to study. Additionally, the findings confirmed the importance of looking at family members (including siblings) as positive role models in youth's lives. c) I have several papers and conference presentations that I am working on with students examining the protective role of sibling relationships when Mexican American college students are facing risk (e.g., parental psychological control and discrimination). The findings from these papers highlight the important protective role of sibling relationships. d) In a paper that was recently published (Killoren et al., 2015), I found that positive sibling relationships were promotive of healthy adjustment including fewer depressive symptoms and less risky behavior involvement.
