Goals / Objectives
To support animal health research for the benefit of improved animal healthof agricultural animals, performed by NCSU faculty. This also may includes animal health research in an animal model system (research not directly involving the livestock disease or target species), Human health-related research in animals (comparative medicine), human health-related laboratory research and research on livestock diseases conducted in foreign countries.
Project Methods
The number of new publications and scientifc presentations genrerated will be tracked.

Target Audience:Veterinarians. Poultry, swine, and horse industries. Changes/Problems: Nothing Reported What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? Nothing Reported How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? Nothing Reported What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? Nothing Reported

Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? Support for Dr. Ravi Kulkarni, Assistant Professor at College of Veterinary Medicine in the department of Population Health and Pathobiology in the area of poultry immunology and microbiolgy with purchase of bacteriology work station Ruskinn Bugbox. His research is in the area of poultry health, disease and vaccines.

Publications

    Progress 10/01/17 to 09/30/18

    Outputs
Target Audience:Production animal workers particularly those involved in swine, poultry and cattle research Changes/Problems: Nothing Reported What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?Graduate students and veterinary students have been involved in the research and particularly with the invitro fertilization work. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? Nothing Reported What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? We will look for additional opportunities to facilitate and support research

    Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? We funded a staff member to assist with a study to identify key factors enabling Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome distribution and the importance of a new virus variant introduction on viral incidence We purchased additional pens for sows to facilitate additional swine disease studies We assisted with the purchase of a new light cycler for the development of new diagnostic tests for poultry pathogens, particularly Marek's virus We assisted with the purchase of an ultrasound for oocyte aspiration and invitro fertilization research in cattle We supported a study to look at prevention and treatment of dust induced asthma in horses

    Publications

      Progress 10/01/16 to 09/30/17

      Outputs
Target Audience:Swine, poultry, cattle and horse industries. Changes/Problems: Nothing Reported What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?Three graduate students participated on the projects, Amanda Zigeler, Trina Westerman and Sicun Fan. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?Publications are in process. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?Continuation of the bovine project.

      Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? We funded research needs in swine, bovine and equine health. These included a study on the impact of stress on the intestinal barrier in piglets, a study on the impact of intestinal antibiotic concentration on the microbiota and antimicrobial susceptibility of foodborne pathogens in cattle and a study on virulence factors of Salmonella in horses.

      Publications

        Progress 10/01/15 to 09/30/16

        Outputs
Target Audience:The Swine, poultry, cattle industry and horse owners. Changes/Problems: Nothing Reported What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? We funded 4 graduate students, Takiya Ball. Alix Berglund, Amy Steiler and Trina Westerman that studied antimicrobial resistance in chickens and pigs, salmonella infection in cattle and horses and gastrointestinal disease and dysfunction in horses. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? At this point, the data is still being collected. Publications will follow. The graduate students did present their research at the annual College ov Veterinary Medicine Research Day. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? For this period we are focusing the funds on a smaller number of research projects but providing a larger amount of funds to these efforts.

        Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? We funded research and equipment needs in poultry, bovine and equine health including bacterial infections in chickens, antibiotic needs in cattle and gastrointestinal disease in horses.
