Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
Karletta Chief: Developed the framework for an educational module on uranium mining for a tribal college Conducted experiments on lysimeter soil to determine water retention characteristics using HYPROP. Collected over 1,000 environmental samples (river sediment, river water, agricultural soil, irrigation water, and irrigation sediment samples) to investigate the impacts of the Gold King Mine Spill on the Navajo Nation. Conducted experiments on lysimeter soil to determine water retention characteristics. Through a $3M NSF NRT Grant secured in 2017, 12 new Graduate Students were recruited and admitted and began their research in Indigenous Food, Energy, and Water Security and Sovereignty. Completed analysis of 850 environmental samples collected in Navajo Farming Communities within one year after the Gold King Mine Spill of 2015. Craig Rasmussen: Quantified the role of energy and mass fluxes on Quaternary soil evolution and development of subsurface structure, geochemistry, and mineral assemblage. Studied the interaction among climate, landscape position, and soil physical properties on the storage and stabilization of soil organic carbon. Developed data quantifying soil amendment control on microbial community composition and biogeochemical cycling in mining systems. Quantified the linkage between Quaternary climate cycling and soil evolution on development of soil physical properties. Studied the soil physical and mineralogical property control on the storage and stabilization of soil organic carbon. Developed and improved digital soil mapping models for 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional spatial variation in soil properties. Marcel Schaap: Worked with researchers from Brazil on estimating hydraulic properties and spatial relations in tropical soils. Worked on python code for an improved model for estimating soil hydraulic properties. An initial analysis was made on estimating bias in several widely-used pedotransfer functions using a global soils database. Worked with graduate student Larsen on fundamental aspects of colloid transport in simple ideal porous media (USDA/NIFA funded research). Published a new method for calibration of vadose zone models for transport of water and solutes in agricultural soils. Obtained new insights regarding pore-scale aspects of colloid transport. Developed code for physically-based pore-scale transport of colloids (also relevant for transport of nanoparticles and viruses). Generated multi-model global maps of soil hydraulic properties (including covariances and uncertainty estimates). These maps are available at a resolution of 1 km^2. Identified Earth-orbital forcing of global soil formation at the scale of tens-of thousands of years in collaboration with Rasmussen. Identified 3D chemical structure of watershed soils in montane environment in collaboration with Rasmussen. Established GitHub repository for Physical model for colloid mobility at the pore-scale Markus Tuller: Modified and applied the ParSWMS parallelized code for solving 3-D water and solute transport. The code was modified to accommodate nonlinear solute adsorption and to support multi-species solute simulations for optimization of soilless greenhouse substrates. Developed a method for semi-automated multiphase segmentation of 4-D Micro-Computed Tomography (mCT) data of porous media and refined a physical framework for generation of artificial porous materials with precisely known phase distributions to test and improve segmentation algorithms. Initiated field experiments with a one-of-a-kind robotic phenotyping scanner to develop physical relationships between SWIR reflectance and actual evapotranspiration in collaboration with Utah State University (Morteza Sadeghi and Scott Jones). Refined predictive capabilities for soil specific surface area based on the Guggenheim-Anderson-Boer sorption model in collaboration with Aarhus University in Denmark. Collaborated with Utah State University to develop a new analytical radiative transfer model to explain effects of particle size on SWIR soil surface reflectance. Collaborated with Utah State University to develop new means to measure soil aggregate stability with SWIR imaging. Developed a framework for delineation of dust emission source zones based on satellite remote sensing observations. Developed approach to quantify soil vapor sorption hysteresis. Developed a framework to generate high-resolution plant available moisture maps from unmanned aircraft system (UAS) observations and ground soil moisture measurements to aid precision irrigation management. Developed a new analytical model for estimation of land surface net water flux from near-surface soil moisture observations. Physically and hydrologically characterized the TERRAPHENOTYPING - REFERENCE (TERRA-REF) field site at 15-cm voxel resolution to establish a comprehensive database for the discovery and modeling of fundamental relationships between soil and plant reflectance, soil water status, and evapotranspiration. Evaluated the applicability of the ecoTech Tensiomark matric potential sensor for in situ determination of the soil water characteristic (SWC). Beta-tested the Campbell SoilVUE TDR soil moisture profiling probe for different soils and boundary conditions. Validated our OPtical TRApezoid Model (OPTRAM) with sub-cm resolution Vis-NIR and SWIR observations obtained with the TERRA-REF platform for potential precision agriculture applications in collaboration with the University of Minnesota and Utah State University. Collaborated with the University of Minnesota and Utah State University to expand our analytical model for estimation of land surface net water flux from near-surface soil moisture observations to the global scale. Ensemble aggregate estimates of pedotransfer functions yield better (global) estimates of soil hydraulic properties than the best "individual" pedotransfer function. Soil formation/degradation occurs multiple timescales, consistent with orbital forcing of eccentricity, precession and axis tilt. Accessible code for physically-based pore-scale transport of colloids (also relevant for transport of nanoparticles and viruses) Multi-model Global maps of soil hydraulic properties (including covariances and uncertainty estimates). These maps are currently available at a resolution of 1 km2 (a 13 GB download). We can also generate maps with a 250x250 m resolution. Markus Tuller: Modified ParSWMS parallelized code to include simulation capabilities for nonlinear solute adsorption and multi-species solute simulations for optimization of soilless greenhouse substrates. Nothing Reported
What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?Karletta Chief: Developed a new partnership with Navajo Technical University as part of a NSF NRT proposal entitled "Indigenous Food, Energy, and Water Security and Sovereignty. Trained 30 Native American technicians in hydrology instrumentation where they spent a month at the University of Arizona. Trained 25 Dine' College students and 30 Dine' Tribal environmental professionals on springs monitoring. Trained 2 Dine' College students in my lab for the summer and they focused on the Gold King Mine Spill impacts on the Navajo Nation. Hosted the Vice President of the Navajo Nation at the University of Arizona for one day where he toured the environmental labs and met with SWES faculty. Hosted 4 Dine' Community members on campus to met with SWES faculty and to present their perspectives on the Gold King Mine Spill. Craig Rasmussen: The project provided opportunities for graduate and undergraduate student participation in field and laboratory activities, and data synthesis. This work also providing professional development opportunities for a Lab Director and post-doctoral researcher. Marcel Schaap: The project has provided training for 1 PhD student (Joshua Larsen). Markus Tuller: The project has provided training for 2 PhD students (Mohammad Gohardoust and Juan Gonzalez-Cena) and a post-doctoral researcher (Ebrahim Babaeian) How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?Research results have been disseminated in collaboration with various involved groups through numerous peer-refereed international journal publications and conference contributions. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? We will continue to work on all 2016 research tasks contributing to all objectives of the W-3188 project and initiate new research as feasible.
Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
Karletta Chief: Developed the framework for an educational module on uranium mining for a tribal college Conducted experiments on lysimeter soil to determine water retention characteristics using HyPROP. Collected over a 1,000 environmental samples (river sediment, river water, agricultural soil, irrigation water, and irrigation sediment samples) to investigate the impacts of the Gold King Mine Spill on the Navajo Nation. Marcel Schaap: Marcel Schaap worked with researchers from Brazil on estimating hydraulic properties and spatial relations in tropical soils. Schaap worked with Zhang on python code for an improved model for estimating soil hydraulic properties. An initial analysis was made on estimating bias in several widely-used pedotransfer functions using a global soils database. Schaap worked with graduate student Larsen on fundamental aspects of colloid transport in simple ideal porous media (USDA/NIFA funded research). With Xu and others Schaap publised a new method for calibration of vadose zone models for transport of water and solutes in agricultural soils. Markus Tuller: Modified and applied the ParSWMS parallelized code for solving 3-D water and solute transport. Refined predictive capabilities for soil specific surface area based on the Guggenheim-Anderson-Boer sorption model in collaboration with Aarhus University (Emmanuel Arthur). Collaborated with Utah State University (Morteza Sadeghi and Scott Jones) to develop a new analytical radiative transfer model to explain effects of particle size on SWIR soil surface reflectance. Collaborated with Utah State University (Morteza Sadeghi, Azadeh Gholoubi, and Scott Jones) to develop new means to measure soil aggregate stability with SWIR imaging.

What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? The project provided training opportunities for graduate students at the University of Arizona and collaborating institutions. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?Research results were disseminated in collaboration with various involved groups through 10 peer-refereed international journal publications and 8 conference contributions. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? We will continue to work on all 2015 research tasks contributing to all objectives of the W-3188 project and initiate new research on airborne and satellite remote sensing of soil moisture.
Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
We developed a physical framework to generate artificial porous materials with precisely known phase distributions to test and improve previously developed 3D multiphase segmentation algorithms for X-Ray CT data. First Newton's equations of motion were solved for a multi particle system considering gravitational, Hertz contact, and frictional particle forces. Measured particle size distributions were used to generate media with varying porosities. The liquid phase was then introduced for various saturation states by means of lattice Boltzmann simulations. Different levels of Poisson and Gaussian noise where then introduced to the 3D volumes to mimic noise inherent to X-Ray CT data acquisition. Obtained data allow precise evaluation of the limitations of commonly applied segmentation algorithms. We are currently testing the newly developed codes to make them available to the research community. In collaboration with Utah State University (Scott Jones and Morteza Sadeghi) we started with a new NSF-funded project aimed at development of novel measurement and remote sensing techniques for characterization of near surface soil hydrology. The overall objectives of this project are to: (i) develop and employ novel in situ measurement techniques for improved understanding of near surface (NS) moisture dynamics; (ii) evaluate critical basic assumptions of remote sensing (RS) methods for NS soil moisture estimation; and (iii) develop and test novel RS algorithms to spatially determine soil hydraulic properties for more accurate land-surface and hydrologic modeling. First results were presented at the AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco. Ebrahim Babaeian joined our group in December as a postdoctoral research associate to work on this project. In collaboration with Aarhus and Aalborg Universities (Emmanuel Arthur, Lis Wollesen de Jonge, Sheela Katuwal, and Per Moldrup) we applied our previously developed 3D multiphase segmentation capabilities to quantify soil pore network complexity with X-Ray CT and gas transport measurements. Flow and transport of gases through soils are largely controlled by pore structural attributes. The quantification of pore network characteristics is therefore essential for accurate prediction of air permeability and gas diffusivity. The pore network characteristics of structured soils were quantified with X-Ray CT and compared with functional pore characteristics estimated from measurements of air permeability and gas diffusivity. Furthermore, predictive models for air permeability and gas diffusivity were developed based on CT-derived structural parameters and compared with previously proposed predictive models. Strong correlations between functional and pore geometry parameters were observed. The consideration of CT-derived air-filled porosity, pore network tortuosity and connectivity, and minimum equivalent pore diameter in predictive gas diffusivity and air permeability models significantly improved their performance. The obtained results suggest that the application of X-ray CT-derived pore-structural parameters has great potential for predicting gas diffusivity and air permeability. In collaboration with Aarhus and Aalborg Universities (Emmanuel Arthur, Lis Wollesen de Jonge and Per Moldrup) we continued to derive soil properties from high resolution vapor sorption isotherms. In 2015 we developed a method to predict clay content from water vapor sorption isotherms considering hysteresis and soil organic matter content and determined the effects of biochar and manure amendments on water vapor sorption in soils. In another collaborative project with Aarhus and Aalborg Universities (Lis Wollesen de Jonge, Dan Jensen, and Per Moldrup) we refined a novel 2-stage approach to predict the soil water characteristic from saturation to oven-dryness from the particle size distribution. The approach combines dry- and wet-region functions to obtain the entire SWC by means of parameterizing a previously developed continuous equation. The dry region function relates gravimetric soil fractions to adsorptive forces and the corresponding water adsorbed to soil particles. The wet region function converts the volumetric particle size fractions to pore size fractions and utilizes the capillary rise equation to predict water content and matric potential pairs. The approach was tested for a large number of repacked and undisturbed soils and compared to commonly applied pedotransfer functions.
