Non Technical Summary
The funds will support the 7th International Symposium on Aquatic Animal Health, which provides an important international forum for presentation and exchange of information on an important diversity of freshwater and marine species, ranging from crustaceans, molluscs, and cephalopods, through elasmobranchs, fish, and marine mammals. The objectives of the research conference include (1) the exchange of up-to-date information on infectious and non infectious diseases of aquatic animals, including disease prevention and treatment, (2) fostering national and international cooperation to support improvements in the health of invertebrates and fish important for aquaculture, and (3) dissemination of current information on control and certification procedures. The support provided through this funding will offset costs of the audiovisual equipment for the meeting

Goals / Objectives
The 7th International Symposium on Aquatic Animal Health, August 31 through September 4, 2012, at the Hilton in Portland, OR, will bring together the expertise of aquatic animal health researchers, practitioners and managers from around the world. The symposium will provide an important international forum for presentation and exchange of information on an important diversity of freshwater and marine species, ranging from crustaceans, molluscs, and cephalopods, through elasmobranchs, teleosts, and marine mammals. The objectives of the research conference include (1) the exchange of up-to-date information on infectious and non infectious diseases of aquatic animals, including disease prevention and treatment, (2) fostering national and international cooperation to support improvements in the health of invertebrates and fish important for aquaculture, and (3) dissemination of current information on control and certification procedures, particularly regarding pathogens listed in the OIE Aquatic Animal Health Code. The format for the symposium includes plenary lectures, contributed oral and poster presentations, and discussion groups and workshops. In an era of almost explosive growth in aquaculture world wide, and with the emergence of numerous pathogens it is imperative that international forums are available that provide an opportunity to exchange current research information concerning their prevention and control. It is especially important that new pathogens identified from specific culture systems or geographic areas are discussed in order to facilitate their detection and identification. In addition, it is important that fish health specialists stay abreast of the latest developments in aquatic animal disease prevention and control for pathogens with broad geographic, or even worldwide distribution, so that aquatic animal health professionals can work to prevent disease outbreaks. Because the expenses associated with attending such an international forum can preclude the participation of some individuals, especially our international partners, minimizing individual participant costs is essential to maximizing participation. To minimize the cost to individual participants, the organizing committee is aggressively pursing external funding from both private and governmental sources. By way of this application, the symposium organizers are requesting NIFA funds to specifically support the symposium's plenary and scientific platform sessions. The subject matter focus of these sessions, and the symposium in general, is aquatic animal health and well-being (NIFA Program A1221). Specifically, the organizers are requesting support to rent computer projection equipment.
Project Methods
The project consists of supporting the audiovisual equipment necessary for running this meeting. This will be contracted through a local audiovisual company.
