What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?The project plans to expand their education programs to include the Boys and Girls Clubs in three communities and assist them with gardens. The project plans to expand their demonstration gardens to provide greater access to the tribal communities as examples of sustainable food production.
Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
#1: Developed educational program for Head Start parents and children. Delivered to 13 Head Start Centers. #2: Conducted three workshops on preparing healthy meals from produce grown in gardens. #3: Presented Basic Gardening workshops in five tribal communities. #4& #5: Conducted 3 food preservation workshops demonstrating canning, de-hydration and traditional Lakota food preservation techniques. #6: Participated in establishing a Farmer's Market in collaboration with the Food Sovereignty Coalition.

What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?The project provided several opportunities for training and professional development for pre-school and elementary teachers in food production and basic gardening. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?

What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?In the final year of the project we plan to continue the services we have provided to tribal communities and in order to sustain the project beyond the project award, we plan to work with the Food Sovereignty Coalition to transfer some of the project's activities to other programs within the coalition. The University will continue with Greenhouse activities to provide the community with seedlings, trees and other gardening necessities, however, will limit the educational outreach to the communities to centralizedworkshops in gardening and food preservation on a yearly basis.
Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
Goal #1: Basic Gardening classes delivered to 13 Rosebud Sioux Tribe Headstart Centers Parent Associations. Goal #3: Delivered gardening workshops in five tribal communities; assisted with planting 2 community gardens, 15 individual gardens in five tribal communities. Goal #4: Conducted reservation-wide food safety and security workshop. Goal #5: Conducted basic gardening classes, food preservation workshops and culinary classes utilizing produce from SGU Demo gardens. Goal #6: Assisted the Food Sovereignty Coalition in conducted Farmer's Markets each Friday in August and September at the local tribal grocery store.

Outputs Target Audience:The target audience for this project is the tribal community at large and specificallly five communities for developing community gardens. Changes/Problems:We are changing our approach to Basic Gardening and Community Gardening because there was a lack of interest in planting community gardens because of conflict among the participants. It came down to one or two people doing the work or in some cases in the garden becoming abandoned by the community and the Project staff put in extra effort to keep the garden growing and harvested the produce. We will continue to work with communities to plant Community Gardens and provide Basic Gardening Workshops, but will have an option for planting individual family gardens. What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?Training for community was provided on a monthly basis Training and Professional Development was provided for staff and administrators through attendance at FALCON conference and at two SD Events. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?News Releases to local newspapers SGU Website What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?The Project is going to focus on individual raised gardens and provide 4' x 8' raised beds and starter plants utilizing Square Foot Gardening. The Project will continue to offer community education on a monthly basis and will offer some Youth Activities during the Summer, 2017.
Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
Basic Gardening Workshops delivered to 78 participants in 5 communities. Five Food Preservation and Food Safety Workshops presents to 71 participants Commuity Education workshops in 15 tribal communitieshad attendance ranging from 5-35 at each workshop. Value Based Lakota Leadership workshop had 76 participants 200+ elementary students participated in plant propigation activities in the Greenhouse Produce from Demonstration gardens used in Student Lunch Program Produce from the Demonstration Gardens and Bison Ranch were used to feed Elders at Annual Elder's Dinner in December Participated in Farmer's Market at local Supermarket Five Community garadens were planted and harvested

Outputs Target Audience:The target audience for ths project in the first year were the persons identified in each of the five (5) selected communities that would be responsible for planting, maintaining and harvesting the community gardens. The participants ranged in age from 12-40 years old. Most of the participants this year had very little experience with gardening. Changes/Problems:

What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?The project provided the opportunity for staff and students to gain certification as a Master Gardener. The project also provided training to the Greenhouse Manager and Greenhouse Technician on several gardening techniques, pest control and marketing produce. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?

What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?The project will continue on the cycle that has been planned. Five new communities will be selected to plant community gardens. Training and Technical assistance will be provided to assure that the community garden is successful and the community has gained the knowledge and skills to continue to plant community gardens without the assistance of the project. The project is also working with REDCO, the tribe's economic development project to train personnel in gardening and assisting with plants and seeds from the Greenhouse. The Project staff have also assisted REDCO in preparing the gardens for planting and assisting with planting the gardens.
Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
#1 Delivered 5 workshops which were developed to introduce participants to food production and food security. #2 Conducted 3 food chemistry workshops to 75 tribal youth demonstrating how fat is stored in the body, how the body utilizes fat, protein, carbohydrates, and the effects of obesity on the body. #3 Selected 5 communities to create community gardens, conducted Gardening training in each of the communities, assisted the 5 selected communities with planting gardens, are continuing with weekly technical assistance in each community. #4 Conducted 4 food preservation workshops and 3 food preparation workshops.
