Non Technical Summary
The project will aid low income, career and technology secondary students of Calhoun and Gilmer counties in achieving greater education attainment rates and increased proficiency in the agricultural sciences. These students are at risk of not completing high school and not obtaining a college degree. The lack of academic proficiencies and familial support network contribute to the lack of academic attainment. These students, however, learn by hands-on experiential learning, have an interest in the agricultural sciences, and will benefit from encouragement and an integrated approach to science and math. The project will produce a replicable academic model between career/technical centers and four year higher education institutions that creates seamless matriculation through collaborative instruction, peer mentoring, and articulation agreements. The project also leverages on-going economic initiatives in central West Virginia toward agricultural science business and development opportunities, expanding the growing need for employees with this knowledge base. Further, the project will increase the availability of business coaching, education, networking, technical resources and community economic development in the agricultural sciences industries. The outcome of the project will be increased rates of high school graduation, college application and enrollments in Natural Resource Management programs, college retention, and science proficiency of career/technical center students. The outreach outcome will include an increased number of business starts and economic developments in the agricultural sciences, combined with increased knowledge of the industry, resources and opportunities. The economic outreach will lead to increased jobs in the agriculture sciences industry in central West Virginia.

Goals / Objectives
1) To create an innovative, replicable pilot program between a four-year NLGCA and a career/technical secondary school that will increase science proficiency and matriculation from secondary school and enrollment in higher education to pursue careers in agriculuture/forestry related jobs thru innovative pedagogy techniques, peer-mentoring programs, collaborative exercises, and exposure to economic opportunities in the region. 2) To develop economic outreach for the agriculture businesses in Central West Virginia to better inform these businesses of activities of one another and other agencies, solicit input for needs, and build collaboration to build the local agriculture economy and increase the need for trained agriculture students for employement.
Project Methods
Develop, sign and implement an articulation agreement between GSC and CGCC providing college credit to CGCC students for coursework in the new Natural Resource Management program at CGCC. Integrate GSC program activities with CGCC students by utilizing unique course scheduling and Blackboard technology. Conduct in-field experiments, service learning, internships and social activities to build camaraderie between GSC and CGCC students and to enhance students' self-assurance. Conduct quarterly meetings to ensure alignment of learning objectives and program rigor in the natural resource management programs at CGCC and GSC. Institute joint professional development for GSC and CGCC Natural Resource Management faculty. Supplement the WVSBDC services being offered in the immediate region to include a special emphasis on Natural Resource Management- and Forestry-related small businesses Conduct outreach training seminars on opportunities, assistance and networking for the Natural Resource Management and Forestry related small businesses Develop with a plan under the Rural Community Development Initiative to coordinate the county EDA Directors in land planning, solid waste disposal and possible community development involving Natural Resource Management and Forestry
