Goals / Objectives
This Agreement will support the purchase of an Agilent GC/MS/MWS 7010D with Markes UNITY-xr with CIA Advantage-xr and ULTRA-xr Autosampler and will also support the purchase of a GERSTEL MultiPurpose Sampler Robotic Pro benchtop sample preparation system, with additional support from the Washington Wine Commission for the Gerstel sample preparation system.
Project Methods
Our collaborator at the Wine Science Center at Washington State University has access to three Agilent GC/single quadrupole MS systems and an Agilent UHPLC/QTOF-MS system for the analysis of volatile and non-volatile compounds, respectively, in grapes and wines affected by smoke exposures. In 2022, our collaborators at WSU and OSU reported the importance of a class of compounds known as thiophenols to the perception of smoke taint in smoke affected grapes and wines. While the GC/single quad MS systems have sufficient sensitivity for the analysis of volatile phenols in affected wines (ug/L concentrations), these instruments are not sufficiently sensitive for the analysis of thiophenols in affected fruit and wines, as thiophenols are present in low ng/L concentrations. The initial analytical measurements of these compounds were done with the collaboration of an industry partner using their GC/triple quadrupole MS system. The analysis of trace level compounds is best done using a GC/triple quad MS system, as these instruments have sufficient sensitivity to measure volatile compounds at concentrations less than 1.0 ng/L. Recently reported sensory thresholds for thiophenols in wines ranged from 6.0 to 25 nanograms/liter, concentrations which are within the capability of a GC/triple quad, but beyond the reach of the GC/single quad instruments currently available at the WSU Wine Science Center. To make progress in the development of analytical methods for smoke related compounds, the Collins lab seeks to purchase an Agilent 8890 GC coupled with an Agilent 7010D Triple quadrupole system.
