Goals / Objectives
Objective 1: Utilize marker-assisted selection tools from Phase 1 research to rapidly select for smut resistance in breeding populations Objective 2: Validate smut resistance in breeding lines selected in Objective 2 Objective 3: Develop and release smut resistant cultivars for commercial production in Argentina and the U.S.
Project Methods
Our team will introgress smut resistance from previously identified immune accessions into cultivated backgrounds of runner, spanish, and Virginia market-type peanuts. An aggressive bioinformatic-based screening protocol will be followed to allow rapid screening of breeding materials for the retention of smut resistance (and other value-added traits) and recurrent parent agronomic performance. Selected breeding lines will be field tested for smut resistance (in Argentina) and agronomic performance (in Argentina and the U.S.). Finally, elite breeding lines will be released as superior smut resistant cultivars for commercial production in the U.S. and in Argentina.
