Goals / Objectives
Expanded food composition data and research focused in ongoing ARS programs will be established through small and large studies on the changing composition of the U.S. food supply. Emerging nutrients of public health importance will be studied and data will be included in USDA food and dietary supplement composition databases. For this project, the objectives are to determine total proanthocyanidins (PACs) in cranberry dietary supplements and to determine the fraction of A-type linkages in the PAC dimer and trimer oligomers.
Project Methods
PAC content will be determined in commercial cranberry products using 4-di-methylaminocinnamaldehyde (DMAC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods. ARS will work with ICT to optimize methods of analysis and quality control protocols. Results for PAC content will be compared among methods and laboratories.
