Non Technical Summary
ERS produces country- and region-specific research on topics related to U.S. agriculture and global markets. Examples of such topics include U.S. agricultural trade with specific partners, the effects of another country's agricultural and trade policies on U.S. agriculture, and noteworthy developments in a specific agricultural sector within a given country.

Goals / Objectives
The United States is a major participant in international agricultural markets, with exports accounting for about 5 percent of U.S. agricultural sales and imports supplying about 5 percent of U.S. food consumption. For this reason, ERS conducts research and analysis on a variety of subjects concerning specific countries and regions. This research customarily involves ERS staff with expertise in those countries and regions and/or in particular commodity markets and usually emphasizes the connection between the research topic and U.S. agriculture. Examples of topics covered in this topic area include U.S. agricultural trade with specific partners, the effects of another country's domestic agricultural supports, regulations, and trade policies on commodity markets in which the United States participates, food demand across countries and regions, and noteworthy developments in a specific agricultural sector within a given country.
Project Methods
ERS employs a varied set of methodologies in its study of specific countries and regions. The methodologies used are tailored to the subject at hand. Examples of these methodologies include partial equilibrium models, computable general equilibrium models, econometric analysis (such as gravity models and time-series analysis), and descriptive policy and economic analysis.

Progress 01/01/01 to 09/30/16

Outputs
This project anticipates trends and emerging issues by conducting high-quality, objective economic research as part of the USDA ERS mission to inform and enhance public and private decision making on economic and policy issues related to food, farming, natural resources and rural America. Findings and impacts are represented through a variety of outputs including reports, journal articles, briefings, and conference presentations. ERS shapes its research program and products to serve those who routinely make or influence public policy and program decisions. Key clientele include White House and USDA policy officials; the U.S. Congress; program administrators/managers; other Federal agencies; State and local government officials; and organizations, including farm and industry groups interested in public policy issues. Current listings of ERS published reports and data products, and journal articles by ERS researchers, can be found at www.ers.usda.gov
