Goals / Objectives
Evaluate the reaction to sugar beet cyst nematode (SBCN) of commercial hybrids and experimental material intended for marketing in California and other areas of USA.
Project Methods
This experiment is a randomized, complete-block design with 20-foot, one-row plots replicated eight times. Resistant and susceptible checks from the Salinas USDA, Agricultural Research Service (ARS) program are included; as are the varieties identified as being of particular interest to Imperial Valley growers and industry. We will evaluate the canopy and assign a score to foliar yellowing due to SBCN (scale 1-5). Sugar beets will be mechanically harvested from each plot, weighed (lb), and pounds converted to tons per acre. Harvested beets will be run through the tare and sugar labs at Spreckels Sugar factory in Brawley, California. Appropriate statistical analyses will be performed on results to determine mean values across replications, significance of main effects and interactions, comparison of means, and correlation of variables measured.
