Goals / Objectives
The objective of this agreement is to complete the field assessment of low-risk herbicides for use in managing water hyacinth. This includes assessing a suite of existing and new herbicides for control of submersed weeds in tanks, continue to assist with assessment of operational field efficacy of herbicidal control of floating and submersed weeds including new weed targets, cooperate with controlled growth experiments of invasive aquatic plants by collaborators, finish field assessments of aquatic weed seasonal growth, maintain and improve an extension and outreach program for the Delta Region Areawide Aquatic Weed Project as well as the programâ¿¿s website, and rear biocontrol insects for water hyacinth and arundo for release in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.
Project Methods
Field trials will be performed with new low-risk herbicides for control of water hyacinth, in cooperation with USDA, Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and other collaborators on the Delta Region Areawide Aquatic Weed Project (DRAAWP). This involves assisting with development and implementation of controlled-growth experiments on invasive plants at the ARS Aquatic Weed Research Laboratory, provide expert assistance with field research on growth and movement of floating and submersed aquatic weeds, work with collaborators to rear biocontrol insects for use on water hyacinth in the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta, collaborate on research on the interaction of Neochetina weevils with water hyacinth, collaborate on research on the interaction of Megamelus planthoppers with waterhyacinth, and document productivity through annual reports, presentations at technical planning meetings and for stakeholders, and in manuscripts submitted to peer-reviewed journals. The continued implementation of extension and outreach programs for the Areawide project will continue, including lead management of the webpage for the Areawide program, and planning of outreach events.
