Goals / Objectives
1. Complete multi-locus phylogenetic analysis of Bactrocera collections and examine character evolution (e.g., morphological variants, geographic variants, and chemical ecology/trapping differences) to test hypotheses regarding species limits, and to improve trapping, control, and quarantine. 2. Use targeted amplicon high throughput sequencing to evaluate ITS locus as diagnostic marker for fruit flies in the genera Anastrepha, Bactrocera, and Ceratitis. 3. Complete the analysis of SNP markers for Bactrocera species-level and population-level analyses. 4. Develop a high throughput procedure for genotyping the Oriental fruit fly and Medfly. 5. Complete technology transfer for Vienna 7 and Vienna 8 diagnostic markers to enable identification of TSL-linked DNA in captured medflies.
Project Methods
Generate fruit fly specimen inventory, characterize the inventory using molecular and morphological techniques, and develop diagnostic tools based on these characters.
