Goals / Objectives
To evaluate the immunogenicity and efficacy of triple-hemagglutinin (HA) virus-like particles (VLPs) in poultry species as a broadly protective Avian Influenza (AI) vaccine.
Project Methods
Triple-hemagglutinin (HA) virus-like particles (VLPs) will be prepared in Sf9 insect cells using baculovirus expression system, including multi-subtype H5/H7/H9 VLPs, and multi-clade H5N1 vaccine. Characteristics of multi-HA VLPs will be determined including expression levels in Sf9 cell culture, genetic stability and the ratio of HA incorporation into VLPs. Immunogenicity and efficacy of multi-HA VLP vaccines will be evaluated in chicken and turkey species. Protection against homologous and heterologous challenges will be tested including multiple strains of HPAI H5N1 virus.
