Progress 10/01/12 to 09/30/13
Outputs Progress Report Objectives (from AD-416): To complete common bean evaluation and improvement for Mozambique. Specifically shovelomics will be used to evaluate root traits in the ADP population to identify important genotypes and traits for breeding efforts. Approach (from AD-416): The ADP population will be planted in Sussundenga, Mozambique and evaluated for root traits at the flowering stage of development. Breeding will continue with lines selected with superior potential. The objectives of this collaborative research corresponded with Objective 1: Identify and map important abiotic (heat and drought) and biotic traits for disease and pest resistance in common bean, and develop useful molecular markers that will help accelerate the breeding process and Objective 2: Develop and release common bean germplasm with higher levels of abiotic stress tolerance, and with multiple resistance, including disease and insect resistance in important U.S. market classes, of the parent project. The Cooperator completed an evaluation of root traits (shovelomics) of the Andean Diversity Panel (ADP) at the Sussendenga Station of IIAM near Chimoio, Mozambique. The activities included: a) planting, maintaining and harvesting a trial composed of the ADP population and; b) Collect root data on the trial using shovelomics methods in collaboration with ARS. The shovelomics component of the project has been completed and the cooperator is currently harvesting the trial to collect yield data.
