Outputs Progress Report Objectives (from AD-416): Lines with low linolenic acid (<3%), and/or less than 7% saturated fatty acids (16:0 + 18:0) will be developed for maturity groups 00, 0 and I and released if competitive in performance. Approach (from AD-416): Utilize classical methods of plant breeding and molecular tools available to accelerate the development of breeding material with higher oil concentration and improved fatty acid profiles. This project is related to Objective 2 of the in-house project: To discover novel genes/alleles in soybean for seed composition, determine their inheritance, determine genomic location, transfer to adapted germplasm, and release. Data from the 2012 plots associated with altered fatty acids have been analyzed. Selections have been made for yield tests, including the regional tests for 2013 planting. Several of the altered fatty acid lines were the highest yielding in their respective preliminary and advanced tests. The top low linolenic lines (many 1-2% linolenic and a few 3%) (28 lines for advanced tests) averaged 110% of the mean for the tests with a range of 101%-125%.The top low saturate lines (12 lines for advanced tests) averaged 105% of the mean with a range of 101-115%. The best lines with modified fatty acid composition form our program were: M06-340057, a maturity group 0 line that is low linolenic, M06-101013, a maturity group I line that is low saturates, and M06-340120, a maturity group I line that has higher oil. M05-319034, a maturity group I line that is low linolenic and M06-338016 is a maturity group 00 with higher oil content.

This project is related to Objective 2 of the in-house project: To discover novel genes/alleles in soybean for seed composition, determine their inheritance, determine genomic location, transfer to adapted germplasm, and release. This new research project is a continuation of the research project 6645- 21220-012-44S and has been active only since April 1, 2012. Yield trials of advanced lines with modified fatty acid composition have been planted. A high yielding low linolenic line is being used as the recurrent parent in a marker assisted backcrossing program that has high oleic lines as the donor parents. High oil lines are being evaluated in yield trials.
