Goals / Objectives
To successfully compete with non-wood and to effectively use our natural forest resources, improved wood products need to be developed. This research includes both enhanced fundamental understanding and creation of new technologies, including the development of products containing nano-components. This problem area focuses on these research aspects and the development of data that leads to efficient technology transfer to industry.
Project Methods
This problem area covers all property evaluations from multicellular to composite performance. Although there is some emphasis on fundamental understanding, the main emphasis is on products that meet desired commercial performance criteria. To understand the whole it is often necessary to focus on parts of the whole. The research effort isdivided into components based upon whether the evaluation involves: (1) the assembled product, such as bonded wood composite or a coated wood surface, (2) the interaction of components at a multi-cellular level, (3) the synthesis of the adhesive or coating, (4) the properties of modified wood, (5) wood components used in non-wood products, or (6) propagation of properties and attributes across length scales.
