Progress 05/15/05 to 09/30/07
Outputs Progress Report Objectives (from AD-416) This project will determine when during the bloom period that flower thrips begin to deposit eggs in potentially damaging areas of the developing apple fruitlet. Approach (from AD-416) Bloom clusters will be collected from apple orchards at different stages between early pink and late petal fall. The clusters are then stained with food coloring to allow detection of thrips' eggs. We will then examine the clusters beneath a dissecting microscope, and count eggs. Documents trust with Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission. Log 29059. Significant Activities that Support Special Target Populations This report serves to document research conducted under a Trust agreement between ARS and Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission. Additional details of research can be found in the report of the parent project 5352- 22000-017-00D 'Management of Insect Pests of Temperate Tree Fruit Crops'. Densities of flower thrips and damage to apples were estimated in 8 apple orchards at several distances into the interior of each orchard. Results showed that densities and damage were highest at the orchard border, suggesting growers in some instances may be able to limit chemical applications to border rows. ADODR STATEMENT: Monitoring of activities and progress on this project was accomplished by direct supervision of on site employees, and use of e- mail and telephone to communicate with off site collaborators.
