Goals / Objectives
The objective of this cooperative research project is to produce and/or synthesize, test and develop microbial biosurfactants and their derivatives for potential commercial applications.
Project Methods
Biosurfactants will be fermentatively produced using fats, oils and their co-products as substrates. Derivatives of the biosurfactants will be synthesized using established and/or novel (bio)chemical synthesis routes. The structures of the biosurfactants and their derivatives will be determined by LC/MS and NMR, and their surface active properties will be measured. Their potential for use in commerical applications will be evaluated in real-world situations. Based on this information, subsequent generations of modified biosurfactants will be produced or synthesized to improve their performance characteristics in targeted applications.

Based on this information, subsequent generations of modified biosurfactants will be produced or synthesized to improve their performance characteristics in targeted applications. Significant Activities that Support Special Target Populations Sophorolipid and rhamnolipid biosurfactants obtained from fermentation using various agricultural fats, oils and their derivatives were prepared and characterized. Chemical modifications of the biosurfactants were performed. The biosurfactants and their chemically modified derivatives were transferred to the cooperator. The cooperator performed additional characterization of their physical properties, and used these materials in the formulation of its commercial products to evaluate the performance. Under terms of confidentiality, the results cannot be disclosed. Progress of the CRADA project was monitored through several site visits by both parties, and frequent e-mail communication and teleconferences.

Significant Activities that Support Special Target Populations This report serves to document research conducted under Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (#58-3K95-5-1119) between ARS and an industrial partner. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent project 1935-41000-067-00D, Integrative Processes for the Bioconversion of Fats, Oils and Their Derivatives into Biobased Materials and Products. Sophorolipids (SLs) and rhamnolipids (RLs) obtained from fermentation of fats, oils and their derivatives were prepared and sent to the cooperator who then evaluated their performance in the formulation of its commercial products. (Under terms of confidentiality, the results cannot be disclosed at this time.)
