Non Technical Summary
Current debate among policymakers continues to center about how best to provide and maintain a viable agricultural sector. This research project uses micro-level data and advanced statistical procedures to identify factors that effect income generation and wealth accumulation. Factors examined are those pertaining to operator's characteristics, household characteristics, and farm characteristics.

Goals / Objectives
Assess factors hypothesized to affect farm income and wealth of farm households and determine how much of the difference in income and wealth is explained by these factors.
Project Methods
The objective of this project is achieved by using weighted multiple linear regression and estimates of coefficient of separate determination to obtain functional relationships and to investigate how much of the inequality among farm households is explained by factors such as operator age, education, hours worked off-farm, and other explanatory variables.

Progress 10/01/02 to 09/30/03

Outputs
Research was undertaken to examine the economic well-being of farm operator households, paying close attention to factors that affected well-being. This research effort resulted in a manuscript titled, "A Close Look a the Economic Well-Being of Farm Operator Households: An Assessment of the Role of the Contributing Components" which is now in peer review. The project used the concept of the gini coefficient and data for an annual surevy of farmers to assess the role of off-farm income and that of income from government payments in the size distribution of farm households' total income. The same technique was also used to measure the extent of dispersion in total household wealth and to examine the role of the contributing components. The project uses a farm operator household time allocation model to measure the determinants of off-farm work decisions by the operator and/or spouse. Yet anothe rthrust of the report was to examine the determinants of economic well-being using econometric techniques.

Progress 10/01/01 to 09/30/02

Outputs
All the computer programs for the project have been written, and a significant amount of writing has been done (all of the introductory section, review of literature section, all the sections pertaining to methods and procedures have been completed, except for a partial section on the specification of the model of economic well-being). What remains to be done is the estimation of the models and the writing of the results.
