Goals / Objectives
Identify potential and existing problems in West Virginia agricultural and extension education delivery systems at the county and school levels. Develop and test alternative means and methods for improving program components; and to improve methodological approaches to measuring effectiveness. Evaluate effectiveness of various components of agricultural and extension education programs.
Project Methods
Additional literature review and internet searches will be conducted prior to beginning any research. This search will focus on identifying the different methodologies used in delivery of extension programs and agriculture trainings. In addition the search will identify and compare differences in methodologies and assessment instruments used with different educational programs. Data on West Virginians' perceptions, opinions, and attitudes concerning potential and existing problems in agricultural and extension education delivery systems at the county and school levels will be gathered primarily via quantitative or qualitative research methods and from selected populations in West Virginia and the nation will be proposed and developed. Data will be collected and analyzed using a variety of appropriate statistical approaches. Different analysis of variance will be conducted as they relate to the demographic variables of gender, socio-economic status, level of education, location (urban versus rural), family composition, and age. Evaluation of agricultural and extension education program components at all levels will provide information which can be used to determine efficiency, effectiveness and impacts. These data will expose program strengths and weaknesses and provide a basis for program modification and development. Appropriate statistical analyses will be used to measure significant differences and analyze possible relationships in the data.

Progress 10/01/15 to 09/30/16

Outputs
Target Audience:Target audiences included various agriculture and extension related groups, including Extensionagents, Studies and articles have focused on impact of serving as an Extension 4-H camping instructor onlife skill development, impact of being a West Virginia State FFA President on career and personal accomplishments, challenges of extension agents and factors which lead to turnover among Extension agents and using observations as an evaluaiton technique. Programs continue to be held to improve agricultural literacy of pre K through 12 grade teachers and to encourage inclusion of agriculturally related topics in the non-agricultural classrooms on adaily basis. Changes/Problems: Nothing Reported What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? Nothing Reported How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?Studies and results are being shared with persons for responsibilties for both programs and one is scheduled to be presented at a professional meeting. Other venues for dissemination of the results and recommendations are being explored to share findings more broadly. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?Continue with related research efforts and dissemination of findings from previousd studies.

Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? A study was conductedto determine if WestVirginia University Extension Camping Instructors were influencingthe life skill development of 4-H youth while alsodeveloping life skills of their own. Study found that the Extension Camping Instructor experience was perceived to have the greatest influence on leadership, community service/volunteering, problem solving, and communication among the target population while the Extension Camping Instructors perceive that their role has the greatest influence on teamwork, self-esteem, and community service/volunteer life skill development among 4-H youth. Adaptability, communication, and working with others who are different were rated as the most valued life skills learned through being an Extension Camping Instructor. In another study of former State FFA Presidents, in almost all of the leadership ability categories, a majority of the respondents rated their ability as excellent reporting that FFA was very or extremely influential. A majority of the participants rated themselves as good to excellent at being able to delegate responsibility, most whom indicated that FFA was very influential. Both studies resulted in recommendations to makethe respectiveprograms stronger and offered suggestions for improvements.

Progress 03/13/14 to 09/30/14

Outputs
Target Audience: Target audiences in this reporting period included numerous agriculture and extension related groups. One study focused on agricultural educators with meats facilities and their use of those facilities. Another study focused on factors that impacted undergraduate students enrolled in the Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design to pursue a degree in an agriculturally related field. Programs were held to improve agricultural literacy of pre-K thru 12th grade teachers. Another study focused on the impact judging teams had on life skills development as perceived by former 4-H judging event participants. While beef cattle producers in West Virginia were the focus of a study looking at forage management practices. Changes/Problems: Nothing Reported What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? Study has found that agricultural education teachers need additional training to feel adequately prepared to fully utilize meat processing facilities owned by the schools. Need could be met with special workshops or additional course work, Work continues to determine bestavenue for training. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? Nothing Reported What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? Results from studies conducted this period will be disseminated to respective audiences and discussions will be held as to how to address the various areas. Additional studies will be conducted.

Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? More advanced training in meats processing needed by high school agricultural educators. One study found that a major contributing factor to students pursuing an agriculturally related field of study was attending and participating in National FFA Convention, therefore schools and universities seeking to recruit students to an agriculturally related field need to have a recruitingpresence at the National FFA Convention.
