Non Technical Summary
The critical need that this research addresses is the lack of knowledge of Appalachian cultural landscapes and the lack of access to research, design and planning assistance for communities that wish to revision their future and create public assets from cultural landscapes. This is a critical need especially in areas of economic and environmentally compromised areas. Methods: The methods for the research will include both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative analysis will include mapping, documentation and analysis of cultural and natural areas. Mapped elements for analysis will include social, economic, demographic, cultural and natural landscape characteristics and dynamics. Qualitative methods include community design techniques administered within the scope of cultural landscape research. These techniques fulfill the objectives or a more full comprehension of the context for planning, and through interpretation be integrated in the planning and design process. Expected Outcomes: Expected outcomes will be a deeper understanding of Appalachian cultural landscapes; stronger communities in Appalachia; enhanced community environments; and landscapes designed to tell the stories of the past by building on local identity towards a sustainable future. Benefits: This project underscores the need for cultural landscape research and planning through community design assistance and the potential economic, social and environmental benefits of planning and design in Appalachia.

Goals / Objectives
The research and analysis of cultural landscapes allows for informed future planning, design and development. The Upland South/Appalachian regions history is one of dynamic change and constantly evolving new forms. These forms are reflections of cultural values, technologies, local economies and natural environmental context. Planning and design within the context of historical forms with adoption and adaptation of the evolving technologies provides for the advancement of human development and culture; enhanced quality of life for citizens and communities; and regional economic development. Objectives: (1) To comprehend more fully the cultural landscapes of the Upland South region, focusing on West Virginia. (2) To apply this understanding to the planning and design of cultural landscapes. (3) To interpret findings for publication and dissemination to local, state, national, and international audiences. Timetable: For 2012-2013 identify viable projects, build relationships with local stakeholders and officials, identify potential sources of external funding, begin mapping, data collection and inventory. For 2014 conduct historical and case study research, continue mapping and generating new data, engage the community officials, stakeholders and the public through appropriate community design techniques and start planning and design development. For 2015 complete analysis of data, continue planning and design development and begin publication development. For 2016 complete planning and design development, complete publication for comment/peer review, revisit community members and others for comment and. Also in 2016 I will begin identification of related research opportunities. For 2017 complete begin distribution, dissemination and publication phases and secure funds for continuing research. Outputs: As a result of the research planning process expected outputs will be annotated drawing sets and maps that describe the economic and spatial analysis performed by the researcher; annotated plans and drawings that synthesize identified cultural landscape characteristics; annotated plans and drawings that depict proposed planning interventions; annotated designs and plans that depict specific site design describing in text and graphics planning strategies. The above outputs will be synthesized in a published report describing the overall research and planning process.
Project Methods
The methods for the research will include both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative analysis will include mapping and recordation of cultural and natural areas. Mapped elements will include social, economic, demographic, cultural and natural landscape characteristics and dynamics. Geographic Information Systems (GIS/GPS) analysis will be a component of cultural landscape assessment and analysis. Other landscape assessment tools and technologies will be applied to the analysis and assessment process as appropriate. These quantitative techniques will allow for more finite comprehensive of the cultural landscapes of the Upland South region, and provide information to be applied to planning and design. Qualitative Analysis community design techniques will be administered within the scope of cultural landscape research. These techniques will fulfill the objectives of a better comprehension of the context for planning, and through interpretation be integrated in the planning and design process. Interviews with property owners, stakeholders, local historians, concerned citizens and the public will inform design and planning. Focus group meetings, narrative collection and surveys will identify environmental themes and issues to be addressed through planning. A variety of individuals, groups, organizations, officials, etc. will be engaged throughout the analysis, assessment, planning and design process as determined by the scope of the project. Observational studies through writing, photography, video and sound recording, conceptual mapping, drawing and other manual, oral, and digital techniques will be applied to the study of cultural landscapes as appropriate. Historical research of a variety of sources (literature, maps, photographs, etc.) will be necessary for the analysis, assessment, planning and design of cultural landscapes. Case study research will be an important component of the overall research procedure.
