Goals / Objectives
The goal of this Conference will be to provide a framework for acceleration of research of sustainable, alternative foods and feedstocks emphasizing bioenergy and biobased products, and to bridge the gap between research and commercialization. The objectives will be: 1) identify and bring together key, cross disciplinary researchers, entrepreneurs, and regionally-based working groups in the areas of the bioenergy and biomaterials to reach sustainable commercialization and other goals such as those set by the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS2). Food and health issues will also be discussed in the context to food security. 2) Provide science-based information to emerging sectors to assure sustainability with regards to environmental, social, and economic impacts. 3) Identify and invite key policymakers, representatives of government agencies that will have an impact on the decisions of how to facilitate advancement in these areas. The expected outputs of the Conference will be to facilitate partnerships across existing government and private research and end users, and emphasize new industrial crops for regional solutions and the most appropriate technology for development.
Project Methods
Goals and objectives will be accomplished by focusing on the most current and relevant research programs in the U.S. and internationally and bringing them together to promote interaction.

Progress 09/01/12 to 02/28/15

Outputs
Target Audience: Conference provided scientists and industry leaders the opportunity to interact and hear new information about new crops and products. Changes/Problems: We have asked for and received a no cost extension to complete the book. What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? The following students received travel awards and presented their research at the conference: Cindy Barrera, The Ohio State University/OARDC, Department of Horticulture and Crop Science Loren Davis, Texas Tech University, Department of Plant and Soil Science Bralie Hendon, Texas Tech University, Department of Plant and Soil Science Brian Iaffaldano, The Ohio State University/OARDC, Department of Horticulture and Crop Science Robert Kelby Imel, Texas Tech University, Department of Plant and Soil Science Ulysius S. McGhee, Fort Valley State University, Fort Valley, GA Phoenix Mourning-Star, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? The results were disseminated via talks and discussion at the conference. Papers from selected talks are being published in the book of Conference Proceedings: New Crops: Bioenergy, Biomaterials and Sustainability. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? Nothing Reported

Impacts
What was accomplished under these goals? The Conference: New Crops: Bioenergy, Biomaterials and Sustainability, was held October 13-16, 2013. Even though our meeting fell in the middle of the 2013 Government shut-down, the meeting was still a big success and one of our most interesting meetings ever. The addition of talks from AFRI grant PIs were excellent. We lost about 25% of our original attendees due to the shut-down but still had a record attendance.
