Progress 10/01/12 to 09/30/17
Outputs Target Audience:This study using Kinect or Structure to conduct body scanning and create personalized avatars. Also this project examines fit of two garment designs on live models compared to fit on two types of virtual models or avatars: a personalized avatar developed through self-body scanning technology, and a selected avatar from a pre-programmed software program. The purpose is to increase understanding of the accuracy and reliability of fitting simulations compared to actual fit. Changes/Problems:
Nothing Reported
What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?More than 300 participants are trained the body scanning procedure to use Kinect as tool conducting body scanning and 20 participants to explore using Structure with iPad. These participants also operate body scanning and review their 3D images and evaluate fitting issues. In addition, all subjects could use free software, MeshLab, to view and edit their avatars with 360 degree view. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?
Nothing Reported
What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?
Nothing Reported
Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
1. More than 300 subjects scanned to set up a hand-held body scan procedure; 2. create 3D avatars to explore the fitting and body types; 3. compared the differences between program avatar and personalized avatars; and 4. identify the strengths and weaknesses of the avatars are currently being used.

Progress 10/01/14 to 09/30/15
Outputs Target Audience:This study examines the fit of two garment designs on live models compared to the fit on two types of virtual models or avatars: a custom avatar developed through self-body scanning technology, and a selected avatar from a pre-programmed software program. The purpose is to increase understanding of the accuracy and reliability of fitting simulations compared to fittings on actual models. Changes/Problems:The problem for this project is purchasing the software, as it will be very costly. These research findings were accepted by the 4th International Conference on 3D Body Scanning Technologies, Nov 20014. However, lack of funding to present my paper as far as Lugano, Switzerland. What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? The awareness of the 3D body scan in self-scanned avatar and increased understanding of the developing reason sizing and good fit on ready to wear apparel design. These research findings were shared with Hawaii local designers andapparel business with virtual technologies. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? The impact of these results are raised awareness of the 3D body scan in self-scanned avatar and increased understanding of the developing reason sizing and good fit on ready to wear apparel design. These research findings were shared with local apparel business to adapted technology. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?More participants are trained the body scanning procedure to use Kinect as tool conducting body scanning. These participants will also operate body scanning and review their 3D images and evaluate fitting issues with comparing with program avatars. In addition, all subjects could use free software to view their avatars with 360 degree.
Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
The purpose is to increase understanding of the accuracy and reliability of fitting simulations compared to actual fit. For this study, muslin garments of an A-line skirt and dress were constructed and photographed on a convenience sample of six participants. The images were compared to the same garment designs simulated on custom avatars developed using the Kinect system and avatars selected from the Optitex computer program that most closely resembled the participant.

These research findings were shared with more than 800 participants at the 3rd International Conference and Exhibition on 3D Body Scanning Technologies; Long Beach, CA. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? Compare the fitting issues with real fabric.
Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
More than 20 participants are trained the body scanning procedure to use Kinect as tool conducting body scanning. These participants also operate body scanning and review their 3D images and evaluate fitting issues with comparing with program avatars. In addition, all subjects could use free software to view their avatars with 360 degree.
