Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
The Extension agents in the Army Substance Abuse Program at Ft. Hood work in combination with other Civil Service employees to teach ASSIST to all troops and as many others as possible. ASSIST is a workshop that educateds individuals the possible signs for suicide and steps that a person can do to help someone that needs assistance. It also teaches community resources and how to access them. ASSIST classes have reached over 30,000 individuals. The agents also participate on the Installation Prevention Team which is a multidisciplinary group that provides education, events and activities that educate community members on prevention of risk behaviors. They are in charge of Suicide Prevention Week events. Displays are set up at locations such as the PX and at Family Events like Freedom Fest which is held on July 4th so that all can receive educaitonal materials. The control clerks work with the program by tracking the trends of substance abuse on the post. They track over 100,000 samples per year for positive results and what the samples, that are processed by the army at another location, are positive for. The results are given to commanders and educators so that substance abuse programming can be targeted to the population and what substance is being most used by the community at a current time. Mandated educational programs are given to those indivduals with positive results. The program is able to reach more individuals and meet the army regulations by haveing Extension employees work in concert with the civil service staff.

Outputs Target Audience: The military population of Ft. Hood Texas, family members, civilians, and retirees of the Ft. Hood community. Changes/Problems: The only change in the approach was the subject matter taught. This was done because of the needs of the military. What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? All Extension Agents have been trained and certified as ASSIST trainers. Control Clerks have attended a certification training held by the Army in Austin Texas. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest? All Ft. Hood Commands are aware of the programming. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals? Coninue to offer the programs weekly and track the participation. Staff is being updated with the next level of ASSIST that was introduced in June. Educational displays and campaigns are also presented to the community throughout the year.
Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
The focus of the Extension Agents has changed within the program for Army Substance abuse to only educate about Suicide prevention. This was the need from the military so we changed the focus that we were teaching to only focus on Suicide prevention. Classes are taught weekly to provide insite and help give soldiers tools to handle situations with friends or within the unit. Instructors have all received training in the Livingworks program of ASSIST. These classes are held every week in addition to a interactive training that the agents facilitate. They also track the trends and give reports to command through the control clerks of areas that need to be educated on. All Ft Hood soldiers are mandated to attend these classes yearly and Extension agents have presented everyweek to make sure that they have reached the 50 thousand plus soldiers on the installation. They have also trained many of the civilians and family members as they are encouraged to attend all classes and many civilians are also mandated due to supervisery duties.
