Non Technical Summary
The goal is to support US attendance at the 7th US-Mexico symposium on Plant Biochemistry and Plant Molecular Biology. This area of research is important to guarantee a secure food supply and international collaboration is key to success. Early career and underrepresented scientists from the US will be supported to help foster collaborations with Mexican scientists that will continue after the meeting.

Goals / Objectives
The goal is to facilitate collaboration between US and Mexican plant scientists by supporting the 7th US-Mexico Symposium. We are focusing on young and underrepresented faculty to support for attendance at this meeting in order to further their careers and hopefully foster interactions with Mexican scientists.
Project Methods
The method is to identify potential faculty that are either early career or from underrepresented groups. In addition, we are looking for scientists that have overlapping interests with Mexican counterparts to foster collaboration after the meeting is over. We will follow up with the supported attendees to determine the effectiveness of selection and the usefulness of the meeting to foster US-Mexico collaborations.

Outputs
OUTPUTS: This project was used to fund US participation in the XIV National Congress of Biochemistry and Plant Molecular Biology 7th Symposium Mexico USA. Ten participants were funded to participate in this meeting targeting women and young faculty. The meeting attracted nearly 300 participants to Campeche, Mexico and each of the funded participants gave oral presentations at the meeting covering topics on plant evolution to plant physiology and development to genetics. PARTICIPANTS: Stacey Simon, Univ of Delaware; Esther van der Knapp, Ohio State University; Mike Barker, Univ of Arizona; Jason Holliday, Virginia Tech.; Maria Monteros, Noble Foundation; Jianxin Ma, Purdue University; Katrien Devos, Univ of Georgia; Melissa Mitchum, Univ. of Missouri; Ana Caicedo, Univ. of Massachussetts; Sarah Hake, Univ California Berkeley; TARGET AUDIENCES: Not relevant to this project. PROJECT MODIFICATIONS: Not relevant to this project.

Impacts
Links between Mexican and US-based scientists were greatly strengthened for mutual benefit. One Mexican participant already secured funding to do a long-term sabbatical with one of the US-funded presenters from Texas. This was based on their introduction at the meeting and mutual research interests. Other participants, especially the younger faculty, noted that the meeting expanded their research horizons and that they too made valuable contacts with colleagues in Mexico for future recruitment of students and postdocs and places were joint research opportunities may be viable. Each of the US-based presenters funded by this project indicated that they took advantage of the meeting, found the information and contacts to be valuable and look forward to developing richer research collaborations with colleagues in Mexico.
