Non Technical Summary
Kosovo has been in a period of military and economic crisis. The government, and especially the national veterinary services of the country are emerging as an independent entity. Animal health monitoring, quality assurance programs, and diagnosis and control of parasitic diseases of dairy cattle are very rudimentary. A trainee has been selected who has an international educational/research background. His area of interest is dairy parasitic diseases. He is positioned well through both his education, research experience, and university employment to influence veterinary education and service in Kosovo. Through the training program at Iowa State University, the trainee will develop a better understanding of implementing dairy reproduction and preventive medicine programs and public policy to improve milk quality and to strengthen the dairy industry of Kosovo. In addition, his training at Iowa State University will strengthen his abilities in on-farm health and disease records, analysis of those records, and development of preventive practices. The program will enhance the trainee's skills in diagnosing, treating, and preventing parasitic diseases of dairy cattle, evaluating milking machine function, and evaluating on-farm practices affecting milk quality. Upon completion of this training program, the trainee will be able to assist the government of Kosovo in developing effective livestock and milk quality policies, and the University of Prishtina in including similar content in their curricula. These enhancements will provide milk producers in Kosovo with a modern framework for the industry.

Goals / Objectives
The Goals of the project are to provide advanced training to one veterinarian from Kosovo in the area of dairy health and disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Some focus will be on parasitic diseases. The Objectives will be to strengthen the trainee's abilities in on-farm health and disease records, analysis of these records, and development of preventive practices. In addition, the program will enhance the trainee's skills in diagnosing, treating, and preventing parasitic diseases of dairy cattle and to evaluate milking machine function. A fourth objective is to enhance the trainee's abilities to evaluate on-farm practices affecting milk quality. The final objective will be to provide the trainee with examples of U.S. public policy in the areas of animal health and product quality.
Project Methods
The objectives will be achieved through mentored hands-on experiences in both laboratories and on-farm situations. Achievement of objectives will be measured by mentor evaluation of trainee skills and abilities and self-evaluation by the trainee.
