In 2013, the FAEIS project celebrated its 30th anniversary. Other highlights include a resolution in support of FAEIS adopted by the APLU-Academic Program Section and the APLU-Board on Agriculture; a USDA-NIFA external program review, where the panel’s closing remarks deemed FAEIS “unique, reliable and important;” and broad-based use of FAEIS by faculty, administrators, and government officials, including the USDA Undersecretary of Agriculture (Dr. K. Woteki). In 2013 alone, the FAEIS public website received 86,793 page hits from 12,594 unique visitors who generated 8,517 reports. This 2011-13 project seeks to advance work done during the previous decade at Virginia Tech by making the FAEIS data and website more accessible to users, improving the reliability and validity of the data by building upon existing data quality procedures and expanding the international programs' database. Specific accomplishments are described below: WEBSITE REDESIGN: At the request of USDA-NIFA, the FAEIS public website (http://faeis.usda.gov) was redesigned to increase usability and ease of access to the most important pages within FAEIS. Features added include a new Data Center (http://faeis.ahnrit.vt.edu/reportspubs.shtml) with links to dynamic reports including Data Dictionaries and MS/Excel files with pivot tables for FAEIS enrollment data. Other important links maintained by FAEIS include USDA-NIFA DOCE Summaries and Descriptions of Funded Projects (http://www.faeis.ahnrit.vt.edu/doce/doce_grants.shtml) and Teach-USDA (http://www.teach-usda.ahnrit.vt.edu). PUBLIC ACCESS TO FAEIS DATA: As recommended in the final report from the 2011 Statistics Expert Panel, web pages have been added to the FAEIS website to allow public access to student survey data and reports. DATA QUALITY: To enhance data quality, the FAEIS team now includes two faculty from the Virginia Tech (VT) Statistics Department as co-PIs and has developed a data quality assurance protocol to verify accuracy of existing 2004-2010 data. Specifically, data verification is complete over these seven years, for all majors for each of the 76 Land-Grant institutions by degree level, gender and ethnicity, involved verifying 230,000 data points. New data is now entered using our data protocol system. The FAEIS team continues to increase the scope of student surveys using data from various sources. The result is an expanding number of participating non-land grant institutions for student enrollment (114) and degrees awarded (159) data for the years 2004-2012. PROVIDE FAEIS DATA TO USERS: The FAEIS public website (http://faeis.usda.gov) is the primary access point for FAEIS resources, which includes over 4,000 individual html pages, PDFs, spreadsheets, and images. Usage continues to grow; e.g., in 2013 the FAEIS website received 86,793 page hits from 12,594 unique visitors who generated 8,517 reports. The FAEIS Report Builder (http://faeis.ag.vt.edu/faeisrpt.cfm) is the primary source for generating reports from FAEIS data. For 2013, FAEIS users generated 8,517 reports. FAEIS frequently assists users with requests for customized reports, e.g., In 2012, at least 26 end users received expert assistance from FAEIS; with 17 in the first five months of 2013, including the Director of NIFA. NEW FAEIS INSTITUTIONS: FAEIS’ efforts in this area have been particularly successful for Tribal land-grant colleges, and for both non land-grant (NLG) colleges and two-year institutions, that have agricultural programs. Completions data (e.g., degrees and certificates awarded) for all disciplines at the 32 Tribal 1994 Land-grant institutions has been added to FAEIS Report Builder for the years 2004-2012. Data at this level of completeness and accessibility has never been available until now. For NLGs, the FAEIS office identified 80 institutions offering degrees in Agricultural Sciences (bachelors or higher). Of these, 44 were already in FAEIS as NARRU(ASSCARR) members; degree data for the additional 36 were added to FAEIS Report Builder for the years 2004-2012; enrollment data was added to FAEIS (2004-2012) for 24 of these 36. Data from FAEIS was used by USDA-NIFA, APLU, and NARRU as the NLGCA competitive grants progressed from concept to reality. Degree data for public two-year institutions granting degrees in Agriculture was also added to FAEIS Report Builder for the years 2004-2012. Results from this data were published in the October, 2013 FAEIS newsletter (http://www.faeis.ahnrit.vt.edu/newsletter/october_13/newsletter_oct13.html ) INTERNATIONAL DATABASE: The International Programs Database module collects data on students studying abroad, international research and outreach projects, and countries with international programs. One-hundred and forty (140) institutions and more than 250 projects have been added to the International Programs database. Results include presentations at conferences and acceptance of an article in the NACTA Journal. Other accomplishments over the term of this project include RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF FAEIS: A resolution in support for FAEIS was passed in 2011 by the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities – Academic Programs Section (APLU-APS) and adopted by the APLU-Board on Agriculture. See page 5 of the following website: http://www.aplu.org/document.doc?id=3568 SURVEY PARTICIPATION FOR 2012: For the 2012 student surveys, we are at 100% for the fifty-eight 1862 Land Grant institutions and 100% for the eighteen 1890 Land Grant institutions. For our partner organizations we are at 100% for the 76 National Association of University Forest Resources Programs (NAUFRP); members; 100% for the 51 BOHS members; and 88% for the 43 Non-land-grant Agriculture and Renewable Resources Universities (NARRU, formerly AASCARR), with one not expected to participate. Participation by Stakeholder Organizations: Participation for the years 2004-2011 has reached nearly 100% for institutions in our stakeholder organizations - Board on Human Sciences (BOHS); NARRU; NAUFRP; Society of American Foresters (SAF). FAEIS NEWSLETTERS: Fifteen FAEIS newsletters were developed and sent by email to over 1,700 FAEIS users, including over 200 recipients in NIFA during this reporting period. FAEIS POSTERS AND PUBLICATIONS: Scholarly output from the FAEIS team included two manuscripts submitted to the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Journal, two research presentations at the 2013 and 2012 NACTA annual conference, respectively; and two research poster presentations at the respective 2013 and 2012 Virginia Tech Annual Conference on Higher Education Pedagogy. Accompanying abstracts were published in conference proceedings. STAKEHOLDER PRESENTATIONS: In 2012/13, FAEIS team members made presentations to our funding sponsor, USDA-NIFA, including the NIFA- Institute of Youth, Family and Community (IYFC) Open House; and at annual conferences of our partner organizations including the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities–Academic Programs Section Universities (APLU-APS); NARRU, North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA), and the 1890 Land-Grant Colleges and Universities Directors’ Meeting. In 2011/12, presentations included APLU-APS, APLU Academic Summit conference, and APLU - International Programs Section, AASCARR, First Americans Land-Grant Consortium (FALCON), NACTA and a keynote address at the 2012 University Education in Natural Resources Conference (NAUFRP). Student data was verified by degree level, gender and ethnicity. 5.LAND-GRANT INSTITUTIONS: Data verification of the FAEIS student surveys from Land-Grant Colleges of Agriculture is complete for the years 2004-2010. The expected completion for the 2011 study surveys is 100%. 6.STAKEHOLDER ORGANIZATIONS: Participation in the FAEIS database is consistently around 95% for higher education institutions in our stakeholder organizations - Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities - Academic Programs Section (APLU-APS); American Association of State Colleges of Agriculture and Renewable Resources (AASCARR); Board on Human Sciences (BOHS); Society of American Foresters (SAF); National Association of University Forest Resources Programs (NAUFRP). 7.PUBLIC ACCESS TO FAEIS DATA: As recommended in the final report from the 2011 Statistics Expert Panel, web pages have been added to the FAEIS website to allow public access to student survey data and reports. 8.STAKEHOLDER PRESENTATIONS AND OUTREACH: Effective stakeholder participation in FAEIS is based on good relationships between stakeholders and the FAEIS team. Our outreach efforts seek to foster these relationships. FAEIS team members made presentations to our funding sponsor, USDA-NIFA, and participated in annual conferences of our partnering organizations: APLU - Academic Programs Section, APLU Academic Summit, APLU - International Programs Section, AASCARR, NAUFRP, and the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA). 9.FAEIS NEWSLETTERS: Since July 2011, seven FAEIS newsletters have been developed and each e-mailed to over 1,600 FAEIS users, including 150 USDA-NIFA recipients. Three special editions focused on the USDA-NIFA Societal Challenge Areas of childhood obesity prevention, climate change, and food safety. PARTICIPANTS: The following individuals contributed to the FAEIS project as the principal investigator and co-principal investigators. Dr. Mary Marchant served as the principal investigator. Dr. Marchant provided leadership for the FAEIS team, collaborated and collected feedback from leaders of stakeholder organizations, and presented findings from FAIES research projects at academic conferences. Drs. Eric Smith and Eric Vance served as co-principal investigators. Drs. Smith and Vance provided expertise and leadership in the area of data quality assurance with regards to the FAEIS database. They worked with the FAEIS team to enact data quality assurance protocol to verify the accuracy of FAEIS data. Dr. Tim Mack also served as a co-principal investigator. Dr. Mack has worked with the FAEIS team in the efforts to ensure data quality, disseminate FAEIS findings, and meet the needs of stakeholder organizations. In addition to the principal investigator and the co-principal investigators, the FAEIS team is also led by Bill Richardson, the project coordinator. Mr. Richardson maintains and updates the FAEIS database. He also works with leaders of stakeholder organizations, and presents findings from FAEIS research projects at academic conferences. Mr. Richardson also manages the FAEIS Help Desk. The FAEIS Help Desk provides customer service to individuals from higher education institutions who submit data and individuals from higher education institutions, government organizations, and non-governmental organizations who use FAEIS data. In addition, members of the FAEIS Help Desk also create customized reports for these individuals that aid in examining student enrollment trends, degrees awarded, emerging disciplines, student placement, institutional comparisons and faculty salaries. The FAEIS team is also made up of five undergraduate and graduate students who work with the FAEIS Help Desk and develop the bi-monthly FAEIS newsletters which disseminate FAEIS findings to members of stakeholder organizations. As mentioned above, the FAEIS team collaborates with a series of stakeholder organizations including the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU) - Academic Programs Section, APLU Academic Summit, American Association of State Colleges of Agriculture and Renewable Resources (AASCARR), National Association of University Forest Resources Programs (NAUFRP), Society of American Foresters (SAF) and the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA). The FAEIS team works with these organizations to ensure that the FAEIS data is accessible, relevant, and meets the needs of these important stakeholder groups. TARGET AUDIENCES: FAEIS provides a national repository for data on student enrollment, degrees awarded, faculty numbers and salaries, placement, and international programs. These data are collected from nearly 200 higher education institutions with departments and colleges focused on agriculture, natural resources, family and consumer sciences/human sciences, veterinary medicine, and other related disciplines.
